Chick-fil-A accused of ‘going woke’ for offering a new sandwich

Fast food chain Chick-fil-A unveiled a new sandwich in select markets Monday, and customers who sampled the “woke” offering were left with questions like, “Why is cauliflower $7?”

Without specifying the duration of their limited time offer, the company known for chicken and upholding Christian values revealed that their new offering would be temporarily available in three areas. They included Denver, Colorado, Charleston, South Carolina, and North Carolina’s Triad of Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point.

“Today, Chick-fil-A announced the test of a one-of-a-kind plant-forward entrée, the Chick-fil-Aâ„¢ Cauliflower Sandwich,” they wrote on Twitter. “Beginning Monday, Feb. 13, the sandwich will be available in three select markets.”

Chick-fil-A director of menu and packaging Leslie Neslage touted the release and credited customers with inspiring them to create a vegetable-based option. “Cauliflower is the hero of our new sandwich, and it was inspired by our original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich. Guests told us they wanted to add more vegetables into their diets,” she claimed, “and they wanted a plant-forward entrée that tasted uniquely Chick-fil-A. Our new sandwich is made with the highest quality ingredients and whole vegetables, and we hope it offers customer another reason to dine at Chick-fil-A.”

Similarly, Stuart Tracy, a culinary developer for the brand, said “We explored every corner of the plant-based space in search of the perfect centerpiece for our plant-forward entrée. Time and time again, we kept returning to cauliflower as the base of our sandwich. After a significant amount of development, we knew we had a one-of-a-kind entrée; one that puts a delicious spin on what we’re known for — great tasting food with ingredients you can trust.”

However, reactions were understandably mixed when the chicken brand stepped out of its lane, not only for trying to expand its market, but for doing so at a higher cost.

One foodie took to TikTok and posted her taste test of the sandwich that asked the question “would you try for $7?”

Throughout the video she can be seen biting into the “cauliflower filet,” which is breaded just like their regular chicken sandwich, and trying to show the viewer how little cauliflower there was on one side compared to the other because the way it was prepared.

Respondents were left asking “How is cauliflower more expensive then [sic] a chicken” and “I’m so tired of vegetarian items being over priced. Literally why? Any time any food has to do with ‘health’ they’re like yeah let’s upcharge that,” as they railed against Chick-fil-A using an actual piece of cauliflower instead of some processed plant patty.

Others couldn’t help but feel that Chick-fil-A was embarking down the path to progressivism as they associated alternative food choices with the left while also blocking replies on their social media page.

“Wow-Christian company @ChickfilA gone woke too,” one wrote with a sad emoji and another said, “You allow no comments on your original tweet. That tells me everything I need to know. Not a penny more spent on your woke agenda.”

Even satirists at The Babylon Bee got in on the action as they zeroed in on the suspected target market with a post titled, “Chick-Fil-A Courts Godless Heathen Community With Cauliflower Sandwich.”

Others pointed out that Chick-fil-A has offered non-chicken options in the past and contended that “There are conservatives…that are vegetarian and vegan too.”

That said, the company made no such claim that the product was wholly vegetarian or vegan as they noted with the release that milk and eggs are needed to make the sandwich that there are no “vegetarian-only preparation surfaces” further suggesting these sandwiches are fried in the same oil as the rest of their foods.
