Three Memphis EMTs fired, seventh officer relieved of duty after Tyre Nichols’ death

Daily Caller News Foundation

Authorities announced Monday that three EMTs were fired and a seventh police officer was removed from duty following the Jan. 7 police beating of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee, according to NBC News.

Nichols died on Jan. 10, three days after police pulled him over and ultimately beat him at another location after he fled, an incident shown in police footage released Friday. The Memphis Fire Department said the fired EMTs’ conduct in their patient response to Nichols ran afoul of department policies and protocols, and the Memphis Police Department said an unnamed seventh responding police officer was “relieved of duty,” NBC News reported.

Five black police officers were fired and charged with second-degree murder and other crimes in connection with Nichols’ death, while police announced that white officer Preston Hemphill was “relieved of duty” but has not been criminally charged, according to NPR. Hemphill’s lawyer Lee Gerald claimed he never went to the second scene, identifying him as the officer whose body camera footage showed Nichols’ original traffic stop.

Protesters stopped traffic on the Memphis-Arkansas Bridge Friday evening amid large demonstrations in the city, and protests were held in Washington, D.C., New York and other major cities, NBC News reported.

The Memphis Police Department did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
