Biden DOJ wants Steve Bannon in jail for 6 months, fined $200k for ‘bad-faith contempt of Congress’

Former Trump advisor Steve Bannon will be sentenced on Friday in the matter of his July 22 conviction for contempt of Congress.

CNN is reporting Monday that the Department of Justice filed a 24-page sentencing memorandum in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Prosecutors are seeking 6 months and a $200,000 fine.

The conservative firebrand was convicted for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the House select committee on the Jan 6 riot on Capitol Hill. He faces a minimum sentence of 60 days in prison or up to 2 years. The maximum fine for the offense is $2,000. It’s puzzling, then, that the DOJ seeks 100 times that amount. We are to understand that it is based on his preference for paying the maximum fine rather than cooperating with the Probation Office’s pre-sentencing financial investigation.

Prosecutors called Bannon’s refusal to comply with a subpoena from the Jan. 6 committee a “sustained, bad-faith contempt of Congress.”

As opposed to a brief, good-faith contempt of Congress. These people love to add unnecessary words to things to make their enemies seem worse. Like “Ultra MAGA”.

The former executive chairman of Breitbart is said to have “flouted the Committee’s authority and ignored the subpoena’s demands.”

The filing further attempted to substantiate prosecutors’ concerns, saying that “The rioters who overran the Capitol on January 6 did not just attack a building – they assaulted the rule of law upon which this country was built and through which it endures. By flouting the Select Committee’s subpoena and its authority, the Defendant exacerbated that assault.”

It is not clear from that statement how it is possible to exacerbate an assault on a date long after the assault occurred. Nor is it clear in any way that the DOJ is interested in the rule of law as much as it is interested in politics.

Did they lack concern for the rule of law in 2014 when the Obama Administration flouted congressional subpoenas when it had a GOP majority? Based on their inaction in that case, it would appear so.

After he was convicted, Bannon made a principled stand, telling Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, “If I go to jail, so be it.”

“I will never back off,” he continued. “I support Trump and the Constitution, and I’m not backing off one inch. If I go to jail, so be it.”

Another former Trump aide, 72-year-old Peter Navarro, was indicted in June for ignoring the J6 committee’s subpoena.

Navarro pled not guilty and accused federal law enforcement of “prosecutorial misconduct,” saying that he wasn’t allowed to make a phone call and that he was isolated in a jail cell. A spokesperson for Navarro said that he turned down a plea offer that would have required him to plead guilty. His trial date is set for Nov 17.

Democrats are excited to see Bannon imprisoned.

Do these people have lives? Debatable.

The Biden Gestapo seems to want to dehumanize every Trump ally it can find.

Navarro said that they not only put handcuffs on him but also leg irons. Maybe they aspire to be more like the medical community in its treatment of unvaccinated COVID patients who were allegedly zip-tied to hospital beds and denied food and water until they died. That may not have been officially established, but anecdotes of such treatment are exceedingly numerous.
