Under pressure, former Los Angeles City Council president Nury Martinez has exited the city council entirely after audio leaked of racially charged conversations with colleagues.
Democrat Martinez had initially announced a leave of absence from the council presidency but retained the position that she was originally elected to in 2013.
The situation apparently became untenable for Martinez, however, when additional audio leaked on Reddit of more offensive remarks.
On Wednesday afternoon, Martinez wrote, in part, that “‘It is with a broken heart that I resign my seat for Council District 6, the community I grew up in and my home.”

In the meantime, an attorney with the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor is sparring with the Los Angeles Times about what it considers the publishing of an illegal recording and implying that legal action could be imminent. A Times attorney fired back, however, that reporting on matters of public concern is constitutionally protected under the First Amendment.
According to the Los Angeles Times, “In the recording reviewed by The Times, Martinez can be heard saying the ‘judíos‘ — which means Jews in Spanish — ‘cut their deal with South L.A.’ Martinez was responding to former Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera, who had concluded, “I’m sure Katz and his crew have an agenda,” referring to former state Assembly member Richard Katz. ‘They are gonna screw everybody else,’ Martinez said in the recording.”

Martinez also allegedly disparaged politicians of Armenian heritage.
Councilmembers Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo apologized for their participation in the October 2021 conversation as did Martinez and are also under fire, as is Herrera, who also apologized.
The controversy was ignited when Martinez was reportedly heard in a leaked conversation referring to fellow council member Mike Bronin as a “little b—-h” and his nearly three-year-old son, who is black, as “an accessory.”
She also allegedly called the youngster “a little monkey” in Spanish. She reportedly suggested that the youngster needed “a beatdown.”

“Martinez also mocked Oaxacans, and said, ‘F— that guy.… He’s with the Blacks,’ while speaking about Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. George Gascón,” the Times added.
The inflammatory audio was first reported by Knock LA.
The late New York City talk show host Bob Grant, who pioneered conservative radio before it was cool and before syndication — let alone streaming — was a thing, often said that when it comes to matters of race, liberals are the ultimate hypocrites.
As a result of this tawdry situation at Democrat-controlled city hall, California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta is launching an investigation into the redistricting process.
L.A. City Council President Nury Martinez has resigned following the leaked tape of her and 2 other council members making racist comments. The other council members will, no doubt, soon resign. Tough to pin this on “white supremacy,” “systemic racism” or Trump. But they’ll try.
