Former President George W. Bush will hit the campaign trail to stump for Colorado senatorial hopeful Joe O’Dea who has come out against another former president, Donald J. Trump, and has gone on record as saying he would not support him for the 2024 GOP nomination.
According to a report from NBC News, the nation’s 43rd president will appear at a fundraiser for O’Dea this month as the Rocky Mountain state Republican seeks to unseat Democrat incumbent Michael Bennet in next month’s election.
NBC’s Bridget Bowman served up the scoop that “Former President George W. Bush is making a rare appearance on the campaign trail, participating in a fundraiser with Colorado Republican Senate nominee Joe O’Dea in about two weeks.”
“The event, shared first with NBC News, is another sign that Bush is aligning himself with candidates who have bucked former President Donald Trump. Earlier in this election cycle, Bush held fundraisers for Georgia GOP Gov. Brian Kemp and Wyoming GOP Gov. Liz Cheney ahead of their primaries against Trump-backed challengers,” she wrote for the outlet.
O’Dea recently told Chuck Todd on NBC flagship “Meet the Press” that “I’m the only Senate candidate for the Republican Party that hasn’t been endorsed by Donald Trump. Probably not going to send me a Christmas card. I don’t want to see him run again … There’s some great Republican candidates out there, and I’m going to help campaign for them,” boasting about not getting the nod from Trump.

In August, O’Dea said in a radio interview, “As far as Trump’s concerned, I hope he doesn’t run. I don’t want to see him as president.”
To his credit, O’Dea also came out against President Joe Biden, “I don’t want to see Joe Biden run again. I think that tears our country apart, and I think I’m where most Americans are.”
Trump ran afoul of the dynastic political family with his complete dismantling of establishment favorite Jeb Bush during the 2016 primaries and delivered the fatal blow to the former governor of Florida at a debate days before the South Carolina primary in which he not only demolished his opponent but his older brother as well.

“O’Dea has said his focus is inflation and the economic health of America, not social issues. O’Dea said he opposes efforts to ban abortion or same-sex marriage and will vote that way in the US Senate,” according to the candidate’s website. “‘You’ve got a lot of politicians in both political parties who spend way too much time trying to tell people how to live their lives,’ O’Dea said. ‘That’s just not me. I live my life. You live yours.'”
Whether Bush will help or be the kiss of death remains to be seen but FiveThirtyEight’s latest forecast doesn’t look good for O’Dea who five weeks out, looks to be clobbered by his Democrat opponent. Perhaps he should have been less critical of Trump whose influence remains strong within the Republican Party, much to the chagrin of the Bush-McCain-Romney establishment camp that has more in common with the Democrats than they would dare to admit.
