Stefanik says media ‘trying to divide’ Republicans in response to ‘Commitment to America’ plan

Unity within the GOP may be up for debate as heavy-hitters have pitted endorsements against each other in Republican primaries throughout the year, but according to House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik (NY) talk of division is a distraction from the fact that “Democrats have no plan.”

The congresswoman joined “Fox News Sunday” host Shannon Bream as part of the recent rollout of the Commitment to America Republicans are coalescing around as the party’s plan for the 118th Congress should they win the majority in November. While its brevity makes the commitment easy to consume, Bream noted the one-page agenda, which reads more like talking points than a plan, was woefully lacking in details.

Referencing House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and the Washington Post who contended the vague plan was by design to hold the myriad factions within the party, namely the conservatives seeking bolder action, together, Bream asked, “I’ve talked to some members of the Freedom Caucus who do feel like they’re being taken for granted a bit in this process, what would you say to them and about accusations you guys are divided?”

“I would say the media is trying to divide us. The Democrats are trying to divide us,” Stefanik retorted. “We are united House Republicans, whether it’s the Freedom Caucus, whether it’s the Republican Governance Group or the Republican Study Committee, all members of Congress were able to provide input in this development of the Commitment to America.”

Furthering her assertion that Republican leadership was looking out for the best interest of the nation, the New York lawmaker went on to boast that, “our constituents provided input in this process. Those are where our best ideas come and the reality is Democrats have no plan when it comes to inflation, they have no plan when it comes to the crime crisis or the border crisis.”

“These crises have been created by Democrats unifying control of government in Washington,” she continued. “Republicans have a plan. We have legislation on each and every one of these issues, and we can’t wait to get it done starting on day one as we earn back the House majority.”

Stefanik’s claims were supported by an unlikely source Saturday when Texas Democrat gubernatorial hopeful and perpetual candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke spoke at the 12th annual TribFest in Austin, TX and asserted the left was losing key demographics like Hispanics because “Republicans showed up with a very strong, compelling economic message,” whereas, “What did we have on our side? Nothing.”

However, Bream refused to let the GOP leader off easy, pressing on the fact that the last time Republicans were in control of both chambers and the White House they had failed to hold to the promise to repeal Obamacare.

In fact, though they had voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act dozens of times while President Barack Obama remained in office, their failure to do so when President Donald Trump came in earned the Republican National Committee and other GOP figures a lawsuit for allegedly engaging “in a pattern of Racketeering, which involves massive fraud perpetrated on Republican voters and contributors.”

Stefanik was undeterred by accusations of the last Republican controlled Congress being “do-nothing” and reminded the host that “the economic growth under Republican leadership” was matched with “the most secure border in our nation’s history” as compared to the “most unsecure border under [President] Joe Biden.”

“It’s up to Joe Biden whether he works with us or whether he will play politics and veto these important bills to reign in inflation, to support law enforcement and make sure we have a safe country, and to secure the border which is in free-fall under Biden’s amnesty policy,” she contended.
