A suspect has been arrested in Austin’s latest jugging incident, a criminal trend that has exploded in the Texas city.
Jamarcus Drumgole, 31, was arrested after allegedly staking out a Bank of America in North Austin on Monday afternoon then following the victim to his apartment where he stole the money the victim withdrew from the bank.
Jugging is where assailants stake out banks and rob victims at a different location after watching them make withdrawals.
More than 80 jugging incidents have occurred since January, resulting in $500,000 in loss for victims, according to Austin police.
Drumgole was arrested on robbery charges and is being held on a $25,000 bond for allegedly following the victim home, jumping out of his gold Cadillac with temporary plates and “violently” robbing the victim, Fox News reported.
A member of APD’s Violent Crimes Task Force was in the area and noticed the Cadillac, but “didn’t think anything was suspicious at first,” Austin PD said.
“The officer watched this vehicle for a short period, unaware of the robbery or the description of the vehicle. When the officer returned to work, he realized the Cadillac was the vehicle involved in the robbery,” police said.
After identifying the vehicle, police used surveillance to track the suspected robber to San Antonio where he was taken into custody, according to Austin PD.
The incident follows on the heels of Friday’s violent robbery of an Austin woman after she withdrew cash at a local Wells Fargo bank.
Two suspects allegedly followed the woman home in a gray BMW.
“As the victim entered her home, the first suspect ran up behind her, violently attacked her, and stole her purse, which had the money from the bank inside,” Austin police said. “During the assault, the suspect threw the victim around and dragged her across the pavement.”
The victim required treatment for injuries sustained during the attack, Fox News reported.
“One of the suspects was described as a Black male in his 20s wearing a black hoodie, black pants, dark-colored gloves and a surgical mask. Police did not release a description for the driver,” according to Fox News.
“It’s insane how often it’s happening, and these guys are dangerous. Unbelievable, right out in the daylight,” Austin resident Jim Ostrander told ABC affiliate KVUE.
Ostrander was robbed at a gas station after cashing a check at a Wells Fargo bank.
“While he was inside paying for his gas, he said someone smashed his truck window and stole the cash from the console,” KVUE reported.
“Obviously followed me from the bank – they were obviously watching me at the bank and followed me,” Ostrander said. “You are talking a full month salary gone in the blink of an eye. I am grateful I am alive. Financially, it’s a big kick. It hurts. It hurts bad.”
Austin police encourage residents to be vigilant, note anyone loitering around financial institutions, talk with bank security if they feel uncomfortable, be aware of the possibility of being followed and keep cash in inconspicuous bags.
