The migrant crisis moves to Chicago

As undocumented migrants continue to pour across the southern border of the United States by the tens of thousands, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott continues to share a tiny bit of the wealth with big, liberal, northern cities.

Wednesday night, he sent the first contingent of 80 to 100 illegal immigrants to Chicago on two buses.

Upon arrival, many of these new guests to Chicago indicated they were from Venezuela. Twenty or thirty of them were small children, according to Fox News.

Abbott’s office issued a statement saying that Chicago will join New York and Washington, D.C. on their list of “drop-off locations” for busloads of migrants sent from Texas.

“President Biden’s inaction at our southern border continues putting the lives of Texans—and Americans—at risk and is overwhelming our communities,” the Republican governor said in a statement.

Not mincing words, Abbott took a direct shot at Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

“Mayor Lightfoot loves to tout the responsibility of her city to welcome all regardless of legal status, and I look forward to seeing this responsibility in action as these migrants receive resources from a sanctuary city with the capacity to serve them,” he said.

With millions of migrant crossings since President Joe Biden took office, border towns have been inundated all year. Ironically, the mainstream media only reports this as a crisis when a hundred of them arrive in a so-called sanctuary city.

A spokesperson for Lightfoot immediately resorted to an ad hominem attack: “Unfortunately, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is without any shame or humanity. But ever since he put these racist practices of expulsion in place, we have been working with our community partners to ready the city to receive these individuals.”

Governor Abbott first started sending busloads of migrants to Democrat-run cities in April, first to Washington, D.C., and later to New York.

It is bewildering the way Democrat-run cities are responding to these arrivals. They are proudly pro-immigrant, both in terms of policy and rhetoric. But their response to the governor of Texas is, ‘how dare you send migrants to our cities?’

Interactions between Abbott and big-city Democrats seem to be conducted entirely through a middleman – the media – suggesting that, at least for the mayors, this is political wrangling, not problem-solving. The mayors never refer to Biden, whose policies obviously created the problem.

Earlier this year, Abbott took a similar tone with New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

“In addition to Washington, D.C., New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city,” he said.

Without a hint of self-awareness, Adams responded, “This is horrific when you think about what the governor is doing.”

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office, in an April statement to ABC News, reacted a little less pejoratively: “Our Administration continues to work with NGOs who are providing resources to the arriving individuals and families. Our partners were able to triage the first bus, which included individuals hoping to settle outside of the region.”

But then, Bowser asked for National Guard assistance on two occasions in August, in order to “help prevent a prolonged humanitarian crisis in our nation’s capital resulting from the daily arrival of migrants.” Her request was denied on both occasions.
