American Association of Medical Colleges mandate courses in anti-racism; patient’s lives are at risk

In what could put the DIE (rather than DEI) in diversity, equity, and inclusion, Fox News host Tucker Carlson is warning that medical schools have reportedly embedded social justice ideology into their curriculum.

In previewing what he described as a “really scary story” Tuesday evening on his eponymous show, Carlson claimed that minimizing merit or competence and prioritizing equity is “putting lives of every American at risk for real.”

Interviewee Heather Mac Donald, the author of “The Diversity Delusion,” among other books, implied that wokeism is neither a safe nor effective, as it were, educational prescription.

“It’s putting patients’ lives at risk when you show up at the ER in an ambulance, Tucker, after a near-fatal heart attack, do you want your doctor to be able to reel off the various forms of white privilege, or do you want them to be able to get your heart going again?” she said.

“Well, according to the AMA, the American Association of Medical Colleges, it’s equally important for your doctor to know all about white privilege. They are mandating courses in anti-racism, in white supremacy, in medical schools,” Mac Donald, who is affiliated with Manhattan Institute think tank, continued.

Mac Donald went to make an ominous prediction.

“We are eviscerating every meritocratic standard in the practice of medicine because it has a disparate impact on blacks and Hispanics, where we admit black and Hispanic medical students with grades that would be, and scores that would be, automatically disqualifying if presented by white and Asian students. And the result of this is going to be declining quality of care, a slowdown in scientific progress, and possible jeopardy to patients’ lives.”

Carlson sensibly pointed out that “nobody cares what color the doctor is; they just want the best possible doctor.” He then wondered why physicians aren’t speaking out against the watering down of standards.

Mac Donald responded that this is the result of cowardice and potential ostracism. “They’re fearful of losing their jobs. The few people that have stood up have been sanctioned, marginalized — they’ve lost positions. It’s an utter mystery, though, overall; I do not understand why they’re allowing a medical profession, a profession that is dedicated to the highest standards to science, to saving lives, to be torn down in this phantom pursuit of phony racism that does not exist in the medical profession.”

Carlson concluded the segment by insisting that “doctors have a moral obligation to fight against this, they really do for the sake of the country and their patients’ lives.”

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges website, “The AAMC, with input from a broad range of education stakeholders, has developed DEI competencies for use across the continuum of undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, and continuing medical education,” with a link to a 16-page “pre-publication” document about how to implement this agenda.

“DEI is a journey and not a destination,” the document claims.

The website contains a lot of information about AAMC’s strategic plan which includes inclusivity and diversity initiatives.

What perhaps makes this scenario even more concerning is that doctors in the West who successfully navigate the standard and often grueling academic checkpoints can make mistakes in treating patients, especially after being trained to look to Big Pharma as an all-purpose solution to chronic illness.

Most medical schools do not provide any significant training in nutrition, for example, or other more holistic techniques.

The medical establishment’s response to COVID is a related issue.

Late last month, Dr. Stanley Goldfarb told Fox News that “The AAMC agenda means that critical race theory will be an integral part of the education of medical students and this can only lead to discrimination against one racial group vs. another…The AAMC sets the standards for medical education. This latest set of expectations for the education of medical students and residents is nothing more than indoctrination in a political ideology and can only detract from achieving a health care system that treats all individual patients optimally.”

At that time, the AAMC provided a long statement to Fox News that read, in part, that “Our goal, and the goal of every medical school, is to recruit a diverse class of talented medical students and educate them to improve the health of their patients and the communities they serve in an evidence-based manner.”

Goldfarb chairs an organization of medical professionals called Do No Harm whose mission is to “protect healthcare from a radical, divisive, and discriminatory ideology. We believe in making healthcare better for all — not undermining it in pursuit of a political agenda.”
