House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has come under heavy fire recently for her trip to Taiwan and especially for taking her son Paul Pelosi Jr. with her. This move seemed suspicious to critics, who worried he might be making business deals while in the country.
During a press conference, she continued to defend her visit to the country and claimed that the United States has not changed its unofficial relationship with Taiwan. At one point she also confirmed the rumor that her son had gone with her on the trip, but defended the action claiming he was just her “escort.”
“His role was to be my escort,” she said. “Usually, we [invite] spouses, not all could come, but I was proud he was there.”
When asked whether he had any business dealings while in the country Pelosi responded, “No he did not. Of course, he did not.”

The speaker also used the press conference to claim there was “no departure” from the status quo in our relationship with Taiwan as established in the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979. However, she also boldly declared “We will not allow China to isolate Taiwan.”
“They’re not keeping us from going to Taiwan …That was our purpose, to salute this thriving democracy,” she explained, though it’s not clear who constitutes “we” or if this is an official United States government position.
While critics blame Pelosi’s trip for escalation in Chinese actions toward Taiwan, Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., who also went on the trip, says the blame rests squarely on China’s shoulders.
“It’s not us that wants to change the status quo, you see that coming from Beijing,” he said.
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., fought back against those who maligned the congregation’s visit by claiming that not going would send a loud message to both China and Taiwan.
“If the cost of avoiding these types of provocative measures is to cede control of Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China, or to cede control of our travel schedules in Congress to the People’s Republic of China, that is not a price we are going to pay,” he argued.
Pelosi also claimed to reporters that she didn’t recall the military warning her away from visiting Taiwan, saying that they took really good care of the congregation on their trip.
“We are very proud of our military. Their preparation actually, I think, minimized the impact of the Chinese on our trip. So they took very good care of us,” she smiled.
Stateside, Pelosi’s husband Paul has been fighting the DUI charges against him. He did not appear at his own arraignment but did plead “not guilty” via his lawyer. As BizPac Review previously reported, Mr. Pelosi is accused of causing a car accident while under the influence of alcohol in May, while driving near their Napa Valley Estate.
