During a post-match interview inside the octagon that has gone viral, a mixed martial arts fighter provided a heartfelt tribute to a close friend who took his own life, and in so doing, raised awareness about the need for men to open up about their psychological or emotional issues.
UFC London winner Paddy Pimblett, 27, began his inspirational remarks by dedicating his victory to a four-year-old boy who sadly died of a rare form of cancer, “I want to dedicate this fight to little baby Lee, little warrior. More of a fighter than any of us will ever be.”
The Liverpool resident then made a dedication to another close friend, and in so doing, delivered a powerful message encouraging men (who tend to be guarded about their feelings) with mental health challenges to seek help rather than suffer in silence
“I woke up on Friday morning, 4 a.m., to a message that one of my friends back home had killed himself. This was five hours before my weigh-in. So Ricky, lad, that’s for you,” Pimblett said.
“There’s a stigma in this world that men can’t talk,” he continued as he received an ovation from the crowd in attendance. “Listen: If you’re a man, and you’ve got weight on your shoulders, and you think the only way you can solve it is by killing yourself, please speak to someone. Speak to anyone. People would rather — I know I’d rather — my mate cry on my shoulder rather than go to his funeral next week. So please, let’s get rid of this stigma. And men, start talking.”
The short video clip shared by the UFC Twitter account alone has received about seven million views and 154,000-plus likes as of this writing.

What a man. 👏
What a message. Things like this save allot of lives. Fury saved a load also. Commend him for it. Never heard of the bloke but I’m a fan now— Anglo Saxon 🏴⚒ (@hurt_puma) July 24, 2022
Absolutely class message from Paddy Pimblett after his win. Men, reach out to anyone if times are tough, ask your mates how they are too pic.twitter.com/YnTv6zpJQk

Minutes after winning a cage fight, Paddy Pimblett delivered an unscripted PSA on mental health awareness that was absolutely perfect. Amazing moment. As he says: Men, please talk. Same goes for women clearly. And kids. Everyone. Listen to this 👇 https://t.co/IyT40armeW

Just came back from UFC London which was absolutely incredible. The atmosphere was out of this world.
The most impressive moment came from Paddy Pimblett with a speech on men's mental health.

Paddy Pimblett using his post fight interview to highlight the continued stigma around mental health in British men. Truly inspirational and tragic in the same breath. The message is simple but incredibly powerful. It’s okay not to be okay, please talk to friends and family ❤️ pic.twitter.com/Ag7obQtX3G

Never have truer words been spoken – Men just do not talk about their problems because they see it as a weakness when really if they did talk it would be seen as a strength

Absolutely incredible, without speaking up to my friend I wouldn’t be here now, Suicidal thoughts are the worst imaginable thing! It takes a brave man to speak out and seek help! If you’re struggling please know there’s help out there for you 🖤🤍

Say what you want about Paddy Pimblett but that message last night was incredibly important! Suicide is wiping out so many men my age. Lads speak up, anyone would rather listen to your problems than go to your funeral. Guarantee that.
