Bill Maher takes issue with today’s ‘woke, p*ssified’ James Bond: ‘Practically stops off to buy Tampons’

Bill Maher has revealed that he is not a fan of the “pathetic” Daniel Craig persona as the fictional British secret agent James Bond.

On his Club Random podcast, the comedian and HBO host lamented that the long-running franchise, unlike the old-school installments, has rendered Bond “p*ssified” and “woke.”

Craig finished up his five-picture run as agent 007 with 2021’s “No Time to Die.” Craig’s portrayal of the character had more of an edge, and was more physically bulked up, than several of his predecessors in the iconic role, but also depicted him as someone bogged down with personal issues.

James Bond entered the conversation as Bill Maher was interviewing YouTuber Hannah Stocking, who noted that she had a science background. Calling Stocking the “hot scientist,” Maher then compared her to the Denise Richards character Dr. Christmas Jones in the 1999 Bond film “The World is Not Enough.” Pierce Brosnan was 007 in that film.

With that opus contrasted with “No Time to Die,” Maher expressed regret that the creative direction had changed since then, in the clip embedded above (*Warning for language).

“It was a movie. It was a James Bond movie. You know, it’s one of these, she was one — and this was back in the day when James Bond was allowed to, like, like, f**k hot chicks. You know, now they really, p*ssified him. On this one, it’s so it’s so pathetic. He literally takes his girlfriend and her daughter on his mission to save the world. He practically stops off at Target to buy tampons on the way to the underground lair,” Maher contended, as if the performance left him shaken, not stirred, as it were, to borrow a Bond signature catchphrase from an entirely different context.

He continued: “This is the woke world we live in. But back in that day, Dr. Christmas and Denise Richards was hotter than the sun — still is. And but also a brilliant scientist. Which is just like, you looked at her and went, ‘That’s not really possible. But I’ll go with it, you know, a brilliant scientist.'”

Actress Lea Seydoux, whose character is also a doctor, is Bond’s love interest in “No Time to Die.”

Acknowledging that James Bond is far less of a womanizer now, Daniel Craig told Yahoo Entertainment in October 2021, “Listen, he’s not done too badly. I hope we’ve sort of changed things. A lot of things that were acceptable in 1962 when they made [the first Bond movie Dr. No] are just not part of the world anymore. And I feel like to have someone that reflects modern life is really important…Bond movies have always sort of mirrored the world around [them].”

For subscribers to Amazon Prime Video, “No Time to Die” currently streams at no extra charge.

Spoiler Alert: Regardless of Maher’s criticism, the film offers something of a disappointing trifecta: Aside from the first 20 minutes or so, it’s boring, overly long, and the plot doesn’t make a whole of sense. Bond aficionados can obviously, however, draw their own conclusions.

It also includes some needless identity politics, which is now standard operating procedure in the entertainment industry.

As part of its nearly $9 billion acquisition of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Amazon Prime now offers the entire James Bond catalog, films loosely based on Ian Fleming’s novels.

Producers are still weighing their options as far as who they select for the title role in James Bond 26, which has prompted much social media chatter.

In late June, co-producer Barbara Broccoli said that “Nobody’s in the running. We’re working out where to go with him, we’re talking that through. There isn’t a script and we can’t come up with one until we decide how we’re going to approach the next film because, really, it’s a reinvention of Bond. We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time. I’d say that filming is at least two years away,” Deadline Hollywood reported, which suggests that Bond will continue to evolve and not to Bill Maher’s liking.
