The invincible ignorance of the green agenda was laid bare earlier this week in Spain when, after having already started a forest fire this summer, an exponentially worse blaze was kindled by a company planting trees.
Land Life is a reforestation company based out of the Netherlands that embarks on projects around the world in the name of creating carbon offsets by planting trees in an attempt to counterbalance the impact of fossil fuel usage on the climate.
Their boast of an innovative business approach utilizing blockchain technology to drive solutions for land restoration was nothing short of disastrous Monday when their project ignited nearly 35,000 acres of forest.
In a statement released by CEOs Rebekah Braswell and Tjeerd Anema Thursday, Land Life took the blame for starting the fire on July 18 within Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon, an autonomous community within Spain. “The fire started while one of our contractors was using a retro-spider excavator to prepare the soil to plant trees later this winter.”

“The operators alerted the emergency services,” the statement continued. “The emergency teams are working non-stop to control the fire and have fortunately established the fire perimeter. Nonetheless, we are devastated by the latest estimate that the damage will be around 14,000 hectares,” or approximately 35,000 acres.
“We sympathize deeply with the feelings of the local community who had to be evacuated from their homes and see their landscape severely damaged,” the CEOs added. However, Antonio Borque, the mayor of Bubierca, the city in Zaragoza where the fire originated, was not at all satisfied with such platitudes, as reported by the Heraldo.
“It is not good that it happens once and that they continue working,” Borque said considering Land Life had been responsible for setting 20 hectares, or roughly 50 acres, of forest on fire June 20. “The Government of Aragon, instead of recommending that the activity cease, should have prohibited it, because there is time to repopulate these hills, where fire breaks out as soon as they throw iron on the stone.”
More than 2,000 residents from towns within the region had to be evacuated, according to local media, and Aragon president Javier Lambán had cautioned his citizens to remain vigilant to any developments in the fire should further evacuations be required.
“Even though the situation is better than the worst forecasts,” Lambán said, “we maintain all alerts active because weather changes could cause activations on different fronts and the best is to act based on worst case scenarios.”
The Land Life CEOs went on to say, “We have opened an investigation to clarify what happened and to determine responsibilities. We will share the results with the authorities and the public as soon as we have them,” after reassuring, “We are a team of passionate professionals committed to the environment.”
