Disney World’s Magic Kingdom gets medieval when two families get in massive brawl

They say it’s the place “Where Dreams Come True.”

And if your dream is to get into a knock-down drag-out brawl in the middle of “The Most Magical Place on Earth,” then Disney World was definitely the place to be. That’s where an epic battle raged for a brief but unforgettable period on a hot July afternoon, when two families traded insults and left hooks on the cruel streets of the Magic Kingdom, somewhere between Cinderella’s Castle and Peter Pan’s Flight.

“We came upon it,” one anonymous eyewitness told the local Fox 35 station, “and it appeared as though it took about two minutes for two security personnel to arrive. Deputies arrived probably about five minutes after that.”

Captain Hook and the Wicked Stepmother would be pleased.

WDW News Today (“The Worldwide Leader in Disney Parks News”) reports that it all started the way most violent incidents do in Disney World—it had to do with someone cutting in line. If you’ve ever had to wait in line for a Disney World ride in the muggy heat of a Florida afternoon in summer, then you know that’s a life-and-death matter. Line-cutters are often dealt with harshly and summarily by fellow Disney patrons.

In this case, a female Disney guest was waiting in line to enjoy Mickey’s PhilharMagic, when she remembered that she’d left her phone on the electric conveyance vehicle. She quickly left the line to retrieve it, while her family remained behind. Seems like a pretty innocuous occurrence, but when she returned—things got heated, to say the least.

Another family waiting in line attempted to prevent the young woman from reentering the line. That’s when her family waited outside the PhilharMagic theater to confront the offending group.

“Listen man, we don’t want trouble, we don’t appreciate you guys pushing my younger sister,” one family member was overheard saying to the other group.

That’s when the fisticuffs began. It went from shouting to physical blows in no time, with one of the men involved ending up in a hospital with a facial laceration.

The Disney World donnybrook was at least as exciting as most of the rides, and for many of the bystanders was probably worth the exorbitant price of admission alone. Eventually, law enforcement became involved (as well as two Disney “Cast Members”). According to WDW News Today, one of the families involved in the brawl “reportedly stole or broke much of what was on their person, including phones, designer clothes, and accessories,” which means somebody’s not having such a magical time in the Magic Kingdom.

The video is tough to watch—like something out of Mulan, worse than the infamous stampede scene in The Lion King. There are visible signs of carnage everywhere: discarded flip-flops, Mickey Mouse ears lying crushed and mangled, and designer sunglasses strewn all over the ground in mute testament to the horrors of the recent battle.

If there are any lessons to be drawn from the mêlée in the Magic Kingdom, it boils down to this: don’t expect to return to your place in line if you leave it. Line-cutters will be punished severely.
