Durbin pours cold water on silly Clarence Thomas impeachment: ‘I don’t think it’s realistic’

Senate Judiciary Committee chair Dick Durbin reportedly poured cold water on the far-left idea of impeaching Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

“I don’t think it’s realistic,” he said on Fox News’ “Fox News Sunday,” as reported by The Hill.

No kidding …

“I think it’s a mistake as to whether he’s going to be impeached. It’s not realistic. But [Thomas] should show good judgment. If this court is going to be credible, it has to be as apolitical as possible,” Durbin added.

The push to impeach Thomas stems partly from his ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, which included with it, arguments for also overturning a number of other major cases.

But it stems far more so from the politics of his wife, who came under fire after it was discovered that she’d supported former President Donald Trump’s courtroom effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

This became a major issue after Thomas refused to recuse himself from a case involving Trump, the Jan. 6th riot, and the effort to overturn the 2020 election.

“In January, Thomas was the only dissenting justice when the court ruled that Trump could not block documents requested by the House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, rioting at the U.S. Capitol,” The Hill notes.

In the months that followed, more supposed “bombshells” emerged about how, both prior to and after the Jan. 6th riot, Ginni had emailed various top officials, including then-President Trump’s own staffers, urging them to do more to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Because of all this, in addition to Thomas’s Roe v. Wade ruling, members of the far-left have been screeching for the 31-year Supreme Court veteran to be impeached.

There’s even a MoveOn.org petition for it. Seen below, the petition predictably cites both the recent abortion ruling, as well as Ginni’s behavior.

“Recently, Justice Clarence Thomas voted against a Supreme Court decision to compel the release of Donald Trump’s records regarding the January 6 insurrection and attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. It has become clear that his wife—longtime conservative activist Ginni Thomas—was actively urging the White House to overturn election results both leading up to January 6 and after the deadly insurrection,” the petition reads.

Thomas’ failure to recuse himself warrants immediate investigation and heightened alarm. And it’s only the latest in a long history of conflicts of interest in the service of a right-wing agenda and mixing his powerful role with his conservative political activism. He has shown he cannot be an impartial justice and is more concerned with covering up his wife’s coup attempts than the health of the Supreme Court. He must resign—or Congress must immediately investigate and impeach.”

FYI, neither appears to be happening — Justice Thomas isn’t resigning, and judging by Durbin’s rhetoric, Democrats are not intent on trying to impeach him.

Nevertheless, some members of the far-left are aiming even higher. They’re specifically calling for every one of the high court’s conservative justices to be impeached.

Case in point:

They’re basing this call on the claim that all six justices lied during their confirmation hearings by saying they would never overturn Roe v. Wade.

“All six justices who voted to strike down Roe told the Senate the same lie. I make a little asterisk for Amy Coney Barrett, not because I have any higher regard for her, but because in fairness she did at least distinguish between precedent and what she called “super-precedent,” noting that Roe was the former while something like Brown v. Board was the latter,” a piece at The New Republic reads.

“This is the real basis on which they could all be threatened with impeachment, as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez correctly argued last week (although only with respect to Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh). They lied, under oath, to get onto the highest law-giving body in the land.”

The problem is that this claim is itself a lie.

Forbes notes that “none” of the justices “explicitly stated they wouldn’t overturn the longstanding precedent, even as they emphasized it was settled precedent.”

All they did was say that they understood that Roe v. Wade is a precedent.

In Justice Neil Gorsuch’s case, for instance, all he said was that “a good judge will consider [Roe v. Wade] as precedent of the U.S. Supreme Court worthy as treatment of precedent like any other.”

That’s it.

Nice try, though, far-leftists …

That being said, they are not happy with Durbin’s reality-check:
