Democrats are reluctantly preparing for their accountability moment in the rapidly approaching midterm elections as the mood in the country grows more sour by the day and President Biden not only fails to lead but has made matters worse with his disastrous policies that have brought record gas prices and staggering inflation, a recipe for electoral disaster that even hardcore partisans are acknowledging.
Barack Obama’s former political guru and hatchet man David Axelrod bemoaned Biden’s dismal performance and the confluence of unfortunate developments that have turned him into an anchor chained around the necks of congressional Democrats as the day of reckoning draws closer by the day.
Axelrod, who now draws a paycheck from CNN as the network’s senior political commentator, joined anchor Jake Tapper on Thursday’s edition of “The Lead” where the two discussed Biden’s vow to support a filibuster exception to resurrect Roe v. Wade, something that “Axe” acknowledged isn’t possible as well as giving his take on the pain at the pump that continues to cut deeply into the budgets of ordinary Americans.
“This is the lot that Biden finds himself in,” Axelrod said. “There is this sense that things are kind of out of control and he’s not in command and this, this lends, you know lends to that,” referring to his empty words about the filibuster workaround, something that moderate Democrat Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema have already shot down.
“You know inflation is…no one president can control inflation,” he added, making excuses for Biden, “but, it is a, it’s a gale force wind right now, it’s affecting politics, very hard to come… you know, you, you heard him on gas prices today, talks about the gas tax holiday.” referring to Biden’s remarks at the G7 conference where he blamed it all on Vladimir Putin and again called for a gas tax holiday, which would do virtually nothing.

Axelrod admitted that the gas tax holiday is a pipe dream for Biden.
“But he’s not gonna get the gas tax holiday and there are a lot of Americans who are skeptical about whether that would help,” he told Tapper. “You know, this is a very, very freighted, uh, fraught environment for him right now.”
Tapper said that he was reading Obama’s latest memoir in which the former president claimed that his opposition to the gas tax holiday the last time that prices spiked, gave him the advantage over Hillary Clinton, allowing him to beat her out to be the Democrat nominee in 2008.
Axelrod agreed, suggesting that the gas tax holiday idea is a scam and that, when it was previously tried when Obama was in the Illinois state legislature, “none of the money got to consumers,” calling it a “gimmick” and a “fig leaf for politicians” while agreeing with Tapper that it helped Obama in 2008 back when gas prices were at the “quaint” $4 a gallon mark.
Tapper then brought up a devastating new poll showing that an astonishing 85 percent of Americans believe that the country is on the wrong track under Biden, adding “that frankly points to disaster for Democrats in November.”
“Yeah,” replied Axelrod. “Look, there a lot of, you know if you were looking at the chart, you’d say the vitals are not good, the president’s approval rating is at 38 percent, his economic ratings are low, consumer confidence is down, the number that you mentioned,”
Axelrod then tried to put a positive spin on impending losses by suggesting that the Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade could energize the party base who will turn out to cast votes based on their emotions over their own economic self-interest.
Biden’s presidency has been such an unmitigated disaster that even the most loyal party operatives are looking to escape the blast radius.
