‘There’s a better option’: WaPo publishes piece begging Congress to block a 2024 Trump run

The left-leaning Washington Post pleaded with Congress on Thursday to block former President Donald Trump from mounting a 2024 election campaign due to the overstated events that took place on Jan. 6, 2020.

“There is a better option to keep Trump out of office than prosecution,” the article was headlined.

“If the goal of prosecuting former president Donald Trump is to protect American democracy from a Trump comeback in 2024, there is a better way to go about it than filing criminal charges,” author and NBC News election law analyst Edward B. Foley wrote.

“Instead, Congress should exercise its constitutional authority to prohibit Trump from seeking the presidency again,” he contended.

The power he referenced is in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment which gives Congress the ability to prevent anyone who has taken an oath to uphold the Constitution as President and “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same.”

Foley noted that “Section 3 of the 14th Amendment sets out the procedure. It provides that ‘no person’ shall hold federal office who, ‘having previously taken an oath’ as a federal officer ‘to support the Constitution of the United States,’ has ‘engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same.’”

Foley believes this method is superior to a criminal trial because it circumvents the evidentiary standards, noting that it “would avoid all the extra burdens of a criminal trial, including proof beyond a reasonable doubt.”

“Moreover, safeguarding the 2024 election from the kind of subversion that Trump attempted in 2020 does not require putting him in prison for his past criminality. Instead, what is necessary is to disable him from being a candidate again,” he wrote.

He claimed that if Congress doesn’t act on their creatively edited footage on display at the public hearings to block Trump’s candidacy, “the Republic is truly in trouble.”

The prime example the left likes to rely on to support Trump’s purported instigation of Jan. 6 events includes footage from a speech held earlier in the day that urges his supporters to peacefully make their voices heard.

“I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard,” Trump told his tens of thousands of supporters.

The problem is that Democrats seem to systematically omit the “peacefully and patriotically” line to better fit their narrative.

New York Post writer Miranda Devine noted the dichotomy between the treatment of duly elected former President Donald Trump for his speech on Jan. 6 and the chaotic Black Lives Matter (BLM) riots in the summer of 2020.

“The 2020 BLM riots injured or blinded more than 2,000 police officers, resulted in the deaths of more than two dozen people and property damage worth more than $1 billion, the most expensive in insurance history,” she wrote.

“As RealClearInvestigations has found, the 2020 BLM riots resulted in ’15 times more injured police officers, 30 times as many arrests, and estimated damages in dollar terms up to 1,300 times more costly than those of the Capitol riot,” she noted.
