First lady Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris celebrated the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the civil rights law credited with the growth in women’s sports, appearing at separate events in Washington D.C., one at which the veep showed off her hoops skills.
Mrs. Biden was joined by women’s tennis legend Billie Jean King at Capital One Arena to mark the occasion as well as the 10th anniversary of the State Department’s Global Sports Mentoring Program.
“For 50 years, Title IX created space for girls and women to be bigger and brighter and stronger and smarter and more capable and courageous,” she said. “And just look at the legacy it’s created. All around us today, here in the United States, millions of girls have grown up able to play sports to build self-reliance and self-esteem. Our schools have created opportunities for women and sacred spaces that help them fight back against discrimination and sexual violence.”
“Title IX is about who we are as a nation,” said Dr. Jill, a community college professor.
“It’s not just about sports … it’s not just about education, Title IX is about who we are as a nation.”

King, who served as an inspiration to women athletes with her historic 1973 match against Bobby Riggs, dubbed the “Battle of the Sexes,” invoked the divisive politics of the Democratic Party, saying, “We must increase compliance with the law. The primary beneficiaries of Title IX have been white, suburban girls.”
“As we stand here today on the eve of the 50th-anniversary passage of Title IX, we can celebrate how far we’ve come – and also take a long look at the work that lies ahead,” the 78-year-old sports and cultural icon said, “Title IX is one of the most important pieces of legislation of the 20th century,”
“Let’s use this milestone anniversary to re-energize our focus on strengthening and advancing equity and opportunity for all girls and women, especially those who have been left behind by the law, including girls of color, girls with disabilities, trans athletes and all LGBTQ+ youth. We have to look forward,” she added.
But it was Harris who drew attention for her own appearance at American University where she strutted out on the basketball court in high heels to lob basketballs at the bucket, launching five bricks before putting the ball through the net after getting a valuable bit of coaching advice from hubby Doug Emhoff to “bend your knees.”

Harris’ bricklaying adds to her human highlight reel of memorable performances, most recently a Monday appearance at a Juneteenth event at the National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington, D.C. where she bumbled her history lesson, claiming that black people had been enslaved in America for 400 years, badly missing the mark between when the first African slaves were brought to the colonies in 1619 and the practice was abolished in 1865.

“Today is a day to celebrate the principle of freedom,” she told a group of children. “And think about it in terms of the context of history, knowing that black people in America were not free for 400 years of slavery, but then at the end of slavery — right? — when that declaration happened, when the Emancipation Proclamation happened, that America had to really think about defining freedom,” said Kamala, botching another easy public relations layup.
