A violent weekend in the nation’s capital included a shooting at an unauthorized street festival leaving a 15-year-old fatally wounded, “screaming out for his mom.”

Crowds gathered Sunday as part of a Juneteenth celebration in Washington, D.C. that had not gone through the permitting process with the city. Called, Moechella, multiple disruptions throughout the event resulted in panicked masses stampeding over one another until, ultimately, a suspect opened fire in the crowd.

Of the four individuals struck, ABC 7 reported there were two adults and one officer wounded in the leg who were all reported to be in stable condition. However, the 15-year-old who was shot succumbed to his injuries.

It was reported that more than 100 officers were present and, after an earlier incident created a panic where a stampede ensued, the police shut down the event for becoming too dangerous.

While those injured from the rush of people were being treated, the wanted suspect began firing, striking the four victims. One of them was allegedly in possession of a firearm as well, but there was no reported exchange of gunfire from civilians or the police.

Daniel Dyson was reportedly a witness of the shooting and explained to WTTG, “Kids hit the floor, an officer was standing next to me, he was shot as well, in the leg. I tried to cover him and I tried to cover the kid that was shot. My shirt was bloody so someone gave me their shirt…it was three times today – people running.”

He also told the outlet of the fatally wounded teen, “He was screaming out for his mom. And it’s hurtful to hear that man. And no one was able to help him.”

“My mind is blown because, you know, I was trying to cover up this guy. And next thing you know, they say he’s no longer here,” Dyson added.

Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a statement during a press conference and said, “We have a child that was killed today at an event that did not have any proper planning for the number of people who were here. Even with our police managing a crowd on site, somebody used a gun and a child is dead. We need some accountability here.”

The New York Post reported that Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee also spoke with the press saying, “When you have large gatherings in a dense area, all it takes is one person introducing a gun to the situation that makes it deadly.”

“In this case, unfortunately, a 15-year-old lost his life,” Contee added.

Of the situation at the festival, he reported multiple firearms had been confiscated prior to and after the shooting. “Right before the shooting occurred, our officers recovered an illegal firearm… Shortly before I walked down here, our officers recovered another illegal firearm … and they were chasing another person with an illegal firearm in the area.”

“I think there’s a theme that you see here. Illegal firearms in the hands of people who should not have them make events like this unsafe for people who just want to enjoy the beautiful weather,” Contee went on, “who want to enjoy Father’s Day and want to enjoy our city.”

From the afternoon into the early morning, D.C. Police posted alerts for a number of investigations related to other shootings reported.

Ahead of the weekend, the D.C. Police Union had posted the latest statistics on crime in the city detailing that there had already been 90 homicides since the year began.

“We are still short 100s of cops and the responsible policing that used to address this has been prohibited by misguided legislation,” they noted.

Dyson told WTTG, “I don’t think I would come outside for nothing else ever here in D.C.”

  1. Violence in one of the most vile, hate-filled blue cities in the US? I’m shocked. We know from J6 the DC cops are at best useless, and at their worst Gestapo violent thugs themselves.
