‘Bi Felicia’: DeSantis spox Christina Pushaw kills it with hilarious response to fired WaPo journo saga

When she isn’t passionately defending the America First policies of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, his spokesperson Christina Pushaw is pushing the envelope on political humor, as evidenced by her response to the firing of now-former Washington Post reporter Felicia Sonmez, who lost both her cool and her career over a silly joke.

As American Wire News reported, Sonmez went ballistic on Twitter after fellow WaPo journalist David Weigel retweeted a joke about women.

“Every girl is bi,” the joke went. “You just have to figure out if it’s polar or sexual.”

While Weigel, who promptly deleted the tweet and apologized, was suspended from WaPo for a month without pay, Sonmez used the joke as a launching pad for a full assault on her colleagues and bosses, including Executive Editor Sally Buzbee.

So inflammatory was Sonmez’s prolonged tantrum, Buzbee was forced to address the mess in a memo to WaPo staff to warn them in not-so-subtle terms that “we do not tolerate colleagues attacking colleagues either face to face or online.”

But Sonmez didn’t get the hint and persisted in slamming anyone and everyone who disagreed with her tirade.

For her epic, multi-tweet freak-out, Sonmez was fired, and to add insult to a self-inflicted injury, she was fired via email.

“This is to inform you that The Post is terminating your employment, effective immediately, for misconduct that includes insubordination, maligning your coworkers online and violating The Post’s standards on workplace collegiality,” wrote the Washington Post’s vice president of Human Resources, Wayne Connell. “As Sally’s Tuesday message reminded everyone, The Post expects all employees to adhere to its standards requiring employees to treat each other respectfully, inclusively, and professionally.”

“Your continued conduct in disparaging your colleagues online disregarded the direction of newsroom leadership and violated The Post’s standards. Your public attempts to question the motives of your co-journalists, based on their expression of views different from yours, also undermines The Post’s reputation for journalistic integrity and fairness,” he continued. “The same is true of your baseless derision directed to our policies and practices, and our commitment to a safe and supportive work environment. We cannot allow you to continue to work as a journalist representing The Washington Post.”

In what must have come as a final, stinging blow, Sonmez was informed that she shouldn’t bother returning to the office to pack up her things.

“In the event that you have left any personal items on the premises, we will make arrangements to return them and for you to return any other Post equipment you have in your possession,” Connell instructed.

The news sparked a flurry of funny tweets from those who were pleased to see Sonmez see some consequences for her behavior, but none were as witty as the fearlessly outspoken Christina Pushaw’s.

“My first instinct was to tweet ‘Bye, Felicia.’ But hear me out,” she tweeted. “Maybe it’s better to spell it ‘Bi, Felicia.'”

For that, Twitter decided, Pushaw should receive the “Tweet of the Year” award.
