GOP slams Dems for using traumatized Uvalde child in hearing, ignoring commonsense ‘hardening’ of schools

Republicans were ridiculed by the left and the media for urging that teachers and guards be armed, that school structures be hardened, and for leaders to pray more and incite less on gun control.

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) gave an impassioned floor speech on Wednesday where his words were taken out of context and mocked by media outlets concerning the hardening of infrastructure in schools, including doors.

He spoke against a sweeping gun control bill in the House that was eventually passed and sent on to the Senate in response to the horrific slaughter in Uvalde, Texas that took the lives of 19 children and two teachers.

Biggs raged against the unconstitutional legislation and claimed that Democrats “don’t care about Second Amendment rights.”

He continued by asserting that teachers should be allowed to carry guns for protection at schools and that armed guards should also be employed as a security measure. Biggs discussed the urgent need to “harden the schools,” ostensibly to make the structures more impenetrable to gun fire and to those attempting to gain access to buildings. Those ideas have been mocked by the left and instead, they have focused on freedom-stripping gun control.

“And you say, ‘Well, we don’t want to talk about doors,’ Biggs stated. “What do we do? We hide behind doors because they work. You can harden schools and make them work, you can arm guards and make them work and make children safer.”

Biggs also contended that Democrats “prolonged the agony” of Uvalde shooting survivor Miah Cerrillo by asking the fourth-grade student to provide testimony for Wednesday’s hearing.

“The most egregious thing that the Democrats did today is they took a person, a young person, little Miah, who was traumatized two weeks ago, still suffering under obvious PTSD as she testified in that video, and bringing that poor little girl to relive this,” he charged, according to Newsweek.

“If we’re talking about PTSD, you just prolonged the agony of that little child. For what? For your own political gain, your own political purpose,” Biggs commented. “That is despicable.”

The Protecting Our Kids Act passed 223-204 in the House but is not expected to pass the Senate, according to ABC News.

If enacted, the gun act would raise the age to buy semiautomatic rifles from 18 to 21. It also cracks down on the sale of high-capacity magazines and puts in place other gun control measures.

The media also took issue with Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) suggesting that maybe if we still had prayers in schools there might be fewer mass shootings. He also intimated that if leaders prayed more in Congress rather than taking the Lord’s name in vain, we might see less violence. He was excoriated for his statements by the left.

“It’s been difficult in debate last week and even today to be told that we have no courage,” Gohmert stated. “We were told in debate last week, ‘Don’t want to hear any more about social media, violent video games, Hollywood, mental illness.’ And they sure don’t want to hear any more about prayers. They’re disgusted hearing about prayers.”

“Look, maybe if we heard more prayers from leaders of this country instead of taking God’s name in vain, we wouldn’t have the mass killings like we didn’t have before prayer was eliminated from school,” Gohmert remarked.
