House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) strongly pushed back against a Fox News host over gun death statistics and blasted Democrats for rushing to push gun control.
Fox News anchor John Roberts interviewed Scalise on Sunday concerning gun violence. Roberts seemed to be in favor of stricter gun control citing recent shootings and measures that would impact the Second Amendment.
He asked Scalise what the best way forward would be concerning guns.
“Well, John, the best way forward is first of all, when you have a shooting, instead of sitting down and going okay, what is really causing this?” Scalise said. “Why do we see these happening more and more in the last few years, it immediately becomes a debate about taking away guns and you see Democrats quickly run in the day of the shooting.”

Scalise took strong issue with President Joe Biden’s calls for more gun control.
“Why don’t we look and see if we can find some telltale signs so that there can be interventions?” he asked, noting that individuals “every day in America” use guns to defend themselves.
Roberts claimed during the interview that the US far outleads the rest of the world in gun deaths, “In terms of the developed world, the United States far and away leads every other nation … in terms of gun violence. The U.S. is way out in front with four deaths per 100,000 people. The next closest nation is Cyprus, way behind at just below .7 deaths per 100,000 people. What do you think is responsible for that discrepancy?”
“In the last couple of years you’ve seen this crazy defund the police movement,” Scalise responded. “But you’ve also seen a movement that’s been going on for a few years in big cities where the DAs aren’t even prosecuting criminals until it is a shooting or a violent crime. And they’re letting criminals back out on the street. And then inevitably what you see is higher rates of crime.”

“Instead of talking about Democrats always wanting to take away the rights of gun owners, law-abiding citizens, especially, why don’t we talk about the root causes of these problems?” he asserted. “And there is some common ground to be found there, John.”
Roberts then quoted a Quinnipiac poll from 2021 that ostensibly shows data that indicates the majority of Americans support stricter measures, such as required background checks and red flag laws.
“You and other Republicans have views about background checks and red flag laws that seem to run counter to what public sentiment is,” the Fox News anchor asserted. “So are the views that you and your colleagues hold out of step with where the nation is?”
“Under the guise of red flag, they take away due process, where they literally can come into your house and take away your gun without you even knowing that there was some kind of proceeding where somebody said, ‘Oh, I think that guy might be a threat,'” Scalise commented. “So now somebody can go and take away your Constitutional right. I don’t think people would agree with that.”

“Congressman, if that had happened in the case of the Buffalo shooter, 10 people would be alive today,” Roberts accusingly stated.
“Again, due process is a Constitutional right,” Scalise insisted.
“The immediate visceral reaction of Democrats in Washington is to go after the rights of gun owners in America, the law-abiding citizens who were using guns to defend themselves,” he charged.
“If you look at what happened in those cities, you see a lot of the things with the defund the police movement, with letting people out no cash bail, where they’re making it easier for people to commit crimes, look at the smash and grab crimes,” he pointed out. “Do you think it’s going to end there if they think they can get away with a crime?”
“They’re not going to be charged, they will go on to commit more crimes and worse crimes. It’s happened in other places. Let’s get back to regular policing,” Scalise concluded.

Obviously, Demorats don’t really care about gun violence in America since they NEVER address the vast majority of gun deaths and violence- the huge numbers of shootings in virtually all Demorat-run American cities. Approx 80% of all gun crimes occur in these hellholes. In fact, the Demorats have vastly increased this gun violence with their insane defunding of police. If these shootings were eliminated by actually putting the criminals who use them in jail for life, the US would have one of the lowest rates of gun violence in the world. But that would eliminate tens of thousands of Demorat voters.
And as far as so-called “assault weapons” are concerned, they are used in a minuscule number of gun crimes, and in far, far less violent attacks than knives, blunt objects or even bare hands!. But they are the most popular rifle purchased by law-abiding American citizens for self-defense.
So, it is self-evident the Demorats’ attempt to ban so-called “assault weapons” is not about addressing gun violence by criminals. It’s all about disarming law-abiding citizens so they cannot protect themselves from criminals and tyrannical government.
If Demorats would eliminate the skyrocketing gun violence in the cities they control, people would be a lot more willing to discuss gun control laws. Of course, if the Demorats eliminated all of this crime, we wouldn’t really need gun control laws.
Roberts is often unprepared for his interviews… he is grossly incorrect about where the U.S. ranks in homicides by gun versus the rest of the world.

Democrats first are the party of wanting to ban all guns. I remember in the 60’s it was banning handguns but they began with “Saturday night specials” They at best would be satisfied with something along the lines of the UK, no handguns kept in the home. If you are on a shooting team you may own a handgun but it must be kept locked up at an approved range. Rifles and shotguns with restrictions may be kept at home but dont even dream of using one to defend your life, you become the criminal.
Democrats are also the party of never letting a crisis go to waste. Bad legislation comes from haste. Not necessarily gun related but an event occurs and amidst the hand wringing and the cries of “pass a law” a new hurriedly law is enacted that becomes a disaster of unintended consequences.
My suggestion to solve the crime problem: Schools should teach that loving people are happier people and the more they love, the happier they are. That is not religion, just common sense. The earlier this is taught the better the chance of success.
I’m beginning to wonder if the Ultra Progressive-George Soros end game with Defund the Police and lightweight prosecutors that are not going after violent crime and then agreeing to ridiculously short sentences for virtually every crime is to have anarchy all over the country in order to justify grabbing all guns? Then they will rule us with an iron fist and pump their chests about how they made everything so “safe”.
Dr. John Lott proved years ago that arming law abiding citizens reduced crime. The perps were afraid their next victim might be carrying gun. The proof of validity of Lott’s data conclusions is that liberals are saying Lott’s study has been debunked. I has not. Look it up. “More Guns, Less Crime”.
You gotta wonder why authorities don’t solve the problem of gun violence when the solution has been demonstrated. Look up “Project Exile” from years ago in Richmond Va. The project used Federal law to add 10 years to jail time for using a gun in a felony. Perps left the area. They were afraid of “doing hard time”. So today?? They just cuss them out and let them go. They must want to keep the violence rate high. There must be some political advantage for the democrats. Do ya think?
The political advantage is that it gives them fodder to put pressure on the Republicans toward their ultimate goal: Make all guns illegal and confiscate as many as possible.
Gun deaths, gun violence, gun attacks. It doesn’t get more pathetic, people blaming guns than the person pulling the trigger.
First of all, most of the so-called “mass shootings” are gang related. However, the increases in shootings and violence in all major cities are a result of one thing and only one thing. DEMOCRATIC POLICIES. Any idiot could have predicted that this would be the result of BLM and the Democratic party’s support (including Joe Biden and Kamala Harris) of “defund the police” and “no bail” policies which send violent criminals right back out onto the street to commit more crimes. They hope that the exponential increase in gun violence will lead uninformed and scared voters to demand stricter gun control measures and eventually gun confiscation from law abiding citizens. The reality is that, if you are scared, then the best thing you can do is to buy a gun to protect yourself and your family as the ever more scarce and “defunded” police likely won’t be around to help.
Mr. Roberts, what idiot whould postulate statements like you made to an individuial citizen and expect to get an honest and accurate answer. You postulated “your summary” of what a 2021 Quinnipiac poll Poll said, as if it was a proven fact – written in stone.
I have got news for you Mr. Roberts (and others like you, e.g., Mike Wallace) Public Opinion Polls are very unscientific, very unreliable, and should never be used to support an argument, pro or con, for any particuliar issue. You, of all people, should know that FACT!
Why don’t you conduct a public opinion poll asking whether Americans are for or against enacting more strigent laws placing restrictions on terrorist suiside bombings which kill innocent people? The obvious answer to such a news narrative would be yes – so therefore it should be done. However, this does not mention the restrictions that would be placed upon terrorist suiside bombers – should the restrictions only be placed agains members of the Islamic religion? Should the restrictions only be placed against the radicalized version of Iranian Shiite muslins?
Your leap from a very generalized public opinion poll to your your attempt to smear Rep. Scalise (and other conservatives or Republicans in general) FAILS miserably by not having intelligent and thoughful details to support the public narravite you seek to enact.
Yes, everyone should hate all the mass shootings in schools, churches and now in a hospital and should support ways to try and help put an end to of restrict such things from happening. However, get you head out of your butt and look around. The Democratic Party has gone out of its way to prevent that from happening because it is such a HUGE political “narrative” they use for support and to raise money.
As a beginning to starting an honest political discussion about the mass shootings in schools and churches, I ask you if anyone has ever made a study to determine the factors these shooters have in common with suiside terrorist bombers. First I think they would find that both groups are, for the most part, mentally deficiant and are subseptible to manipulation by evil people. Is there a difference between a terrorist suiside bomber and a mass shooter in a school – almost all of whom are killed in the process. Who are the evil people who are encouraging and supporting (whether intentional or not) the terrorist mass shooters? What are the tools or technics used to manipulate (brain wash) terrorist suiside bombers and terrorist suiside shooters into commiting their horrible evil acts?
Should the US officials or others (like news people) be consulting with the State of Isreal (Britton to a lesser extend) to learn what, if any, tactics they used to help mitigagte against the grooming and emplementation of the suiside bomb terrorist they dewelt with for such a long period of time. Would those tactics help within the USA?
Mr. Roberts, please, get serious and don’t just be another idiot talking head on TV trying to drive you own ratings!
Guns dont kill people , bullets do. So if they take away all the legit gun owners rights the only guns left will either be zips or ghost guns. Besides, there is a common link in the majority of these shooting which is the fact that a majority of the perps. had taken Ridalin at one time or another. No one knows what the long term affects are with ridalin. The FDA keeps legalizing and pushing crap through their system without proper testing, while big pharma “the legal drug cartel gets rich. But they wont dare address the real problem.
Due process is not a right for the J6 political prisoners!
The gun prohibitionists always suggest and then demand, compromise. It sounds so — fair and equitable. But the only ones who are expected to compromise are the gun owners. We are expected to compromise our rights, freedom and safety so that the uncompromising anti-gunners can “feel” safer. Have you ever heard of them compromising and repealing a bad gun law because it didn’t work? All 20,000+ gun laws are working so well that we need more? It is not compromise, it is capitulation that they are demanding.
I wonder how the twits feel about someone else compromising their rights away. How about the Patriot Act? Don’t you FEEL safer knowing that your representatives gave up just a little of your right to privacy? Are you willing to compromise again, when they ask for just a little more? Yeah, I know twits: it’s not your fault; no never your fault for not fighting for your rights. Capitulation feels good, doesn’t it?
let’s do what Major League sports coverage does, REFUSE TO SHOW THE PEOPLE RUNNING ON THE FIELD, STREAKING ETC. If we deny these people their 15 minutes of fame, they realize they don’t get on TV. People committing gun crimes are guaranteed their name and pictures will be all over the media.
Why are we still having this debate? Clearly the gun grabbers don’t have a single valid argument to counter the “ban guns and only criminals will have guns” argument because that is exactly what will happen. And clearly the gun grabbers don’t really care about saving lives because they are doing everything they can to enable more crime, not to mention the fact that they still support abortion.
It is as clear as the nose on your face that their only interest is to demolish the Second Amendment and disarm law abiding citizens to make them easier to control.
