HBO’s “Real Time” host Bill Maher seemed baffled by author Michael Shellenberger’s comments on responsibility, not only in connection to slavery but to current events such as the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial.
The commentary went right over the comic’s head Friday and he wasn’t the only one who seemed to not understand the concept of responsibility.
The commentary from the California gubernatorial candidate came after conservative British author Douglas Murray noted that America needs to “get off this thing of beating up on their own past” concerning slavery via progressive vehicles such as The 1619 Project.
“There are 40 million slaves in the world today. That’s more than there were in the 19th century. If people in America could get off this thing of endlessly beating up on their own, on their own past, and look at the world today, you could do something about actual problems,” Murray stated.

“You’re also saying something else, which is that we’re responsible for our own behaviors. We’re not responsible for the behaviors of white people 200 years ago. It’s individual responsibility. So Amber Heard is responsible for her behaviors. Johnny Depp is responsible for his behaviors,” Shellenberger pointed out.
“That’s quite a segue way, Mike,” Maher quipped, mocking the author of “San Fransicko: Why Progressives Ruin Cities”.
“I was thinking about it beforehand because the producers said I needed to have something to say about this. Um, you know, equal justice under the law is a better principle than believing all women. We actually have a system set up to evaluate the claims made, and we don’t discriminate or make judgments based on your group identity. We hold individual responsibility above all else,” Shellenberger further stated.
That was not the only hot topic that Maher discussed with him. He also delved into the Uvalde massacre and how authorities handled the mass shooting after jokes at the expense of the police.

Shellenberger said, “I think there was this initial reaction that these police officers were cowardly. I don’t think we know that.”
“Really?” Maher asked.
“I have to expect that many of those police officers are having a hard time sleeping at night after what’s occurred,” the author commented
“Oh, I feel bad for them,” Maher snarked. “They should have a hard time sleeping. That’s, this, what the f***?”
“When our institutions fail us, we are so quick to want to shut down the institutions, want to demonize the people in those institutions. Yes, they got trained… the training didn’t work. The answer to it is gonna be more training, is gonna be to get better at it. We focus on when things go wrong, but things mostly don’t go wrong, we need to learn from these mistakes…” Shellenberger contended.

“It’s not institutions, it’s people. This is not institutions who didn’t run into the building, it’s people. People didn’t do it. That’s not an institution,” Maher charged.
“By the way, this is part of the problem with police training. Their training is all about how to preserve their life. Now, of course, we want them to be as safe as they can, but it is a job that entails danger. Somewhere, they got it into their heads, the cops, that ‘it’s better that I just preserve my health.’ But you’re there to protect and serve us. That’s the deal,” he argued.
“You get to, you know, walk tall all the time, everybody kisses your ass, everybody has to comply with you. And then once in a while, you just have to ball up and do the job. [And] it’s dangerous,” the host concluded.
