Mom stirs controversy with video of her calmly giving birth in the Pacific Ocean

A Nicaraguan couple has gone viral after the mother was filmed giving birth to her baby in the sands of the Pacific Ocean.

Thirty-seven-year-old Josy Peukert decided to “free-birth’ her fourth child as a testament to what women can do without the assistance of doctors and medical technology. She also recalled how her first three childbirths took a toll on her emotional well-being.

“I wanted to be worry-free for once. My first birth was traumatic in a clinic and my second birth was a home birth but by the third even a midwife in my home was too much,” she explained, according to Daily Mail.

“This time I had no doctors appointments or scans or outside influence.”

“I got this idea in my head I wanted to give birth in the ocean,” explained Peukert, who emigrated to Nicaragua from Germany along with her partner, Benni Cornelius, 42. Between the two, they share seven children.

“For weeks I monitored the tide, and so when the time was right for me to give birth I knew the beach would be safe for us,” she said.

When the time was near, the couple sent their kids to stay with friends and headed out to the shoreline of Playa Majagual, Nicaragua, equipped with towels and a bowl with a sieve to catch the placenta, Daily Mail reported.

“The waves had the same rhythm as the contractions, that smooth flow made me feel really good,” Peukert said.

She gave birth to Bodhi Amor Ocean Cornelius on February 27, but the video (which was edited by the couple) has captured the attention of the internet only recently.

“After Bodhi was born and wrapped up in towels I went back into the ocean to freshen up,” the mother recalled.

“Then I got dressed and we packed everything up and drove home where the three of us got straight into bed.”

The little fella weighed in at seven pounds, six ounces after the couple used a luggage scale in their home later that evening.

She continued, “We didn’t have a due date or deadline for the baby to arrive we just trusted that our baby would make its way. I had no fears or worries to welcome a new little soul into our lives, just me, my partner and the waves. It was beautiful. The soft volcanic sand under me reminded me there is nothing else between heaven and earth just life.”

Much controversy surrounds the birthing of children without modern medical assistance, as Josy Peukert’s Instagram post revealed.

One user said, “What a legend, what a mother, what a lucky boy! Pure nature is all you need.”

Another described her decision as “so empowering.”

“Is this sanitary? There’s a lot of bacteria in the sea,” wrote another.

On person remarked, “What a shock for that bubba – from a warm womb to the cold ocean.”

The mom said, “Bodhi was born in the midday sun when it was about 35 degrees, we weren’t worried at all that he’d be cold and I had no concerns about waterborne infections. He is perfectly healthy. I did all the research I needed to to make sure it was safe.”

She added, “Water is a barrier that is medically proven. For me and this baby, I wanted to feel completely connected by my own self directed care. This pregnancy was the greatest gift we could have imagined and wished for.

From the Daily Mail:

What is a ‘free birth’?

A free birth or Unassisted Childbirth (UC) refers to when a woman chooses to give birth at home or elsewhere without the assistance of a healthcare professional, according to Doula UK.

While the medical profession considers the practice a risk to both mother and baby, the organisation says it’s a ‘perfectly legal and legitimate informed choice for a woman to make in the UK’.

However, article 45 of the Nursing and Midwifery Order it is an offence for any unqualified person to deliver a baby unless it is an emergency.

Statistics on the number of UCs in the UK have not been collected by the NHS.

In the U.S., around 7,000 babies are born a year without medical assistance.

But it’s not clear what portion of these are voluntary free births as the number naturally includes ‘births before arrival’ where there was no time for medical intervention.

On Instagram alone the Freebirth Society of which Lisa [Josy] was a member has more than 22,000 members.

  1. Actually it is the ignorance of & absence of real health & paranoid fear of germs & nonexistent viruses that is quickly enslaving the human race & that will be its end.

  2. My son, my daughter-in-law, and my first grandchild would have died if we had not been in a hospital. My third grandchild, born at full term, had issues with his lungs. The doctor told my son that’s why we have babies in the hospital. A friend of my daughter-in-law’s lost her sixth child giving birth in a midwife’s clinic earlier this year. That woman is lucky, and stupid.

  3. It is a great way to take care of overpopulation. Going back to when many children died during birth and soon after. This woman does not realize, what she could have done to that child and as, nothing bad has shown up yet, they present themselves as guiding future births for others. It is basically determined, Nature (Called God, or even other names, if you wish) created the human race and the human race will be the cause of their own demise. She may be recorded in history, as one of the beginners of the demise of the human race.
