Uvalde is Matthew McConaughey’s home town. Here is what he had to say about the tragic shooting.

Unlike the visceral reactions so often presented by Hollywood elites in the wake of any event, and especially tragedies like the Texas school shooting Tuesday, one celebrity offered up a measured and seemingly bipartisan statement seeking unity where even President Joe Biden had sowed division.

An 18-year-old suspect walked into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas Tuesday where he opened fire killing at least 19 children and two teachers before dying himself in a shootout with a Border Patrol agent at the scene. The reprehensible act of evil committed in his hometown was too much for Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey to remain silent.

Born and raised in Uvalde, the actor who has flirted with runs for political office in the past, began with his summary of the massacre writing, “Once again we have tragically proven that we are failing to be responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us.”

Pushing for concerted introspection over the standard impulsive, knee-jerk hot take, he asked his fellow Americans to seriously consider, “What is it that we truly value? How do we repair the problem? What small sacrifices can we individually take today, to preserve a healthier and safer nation, state, and neighborhood tomorrow?”

Not only was McConaughey raised in Uvalde but, as Entertainment Tonight reported, his mother Kay was a kindergarten teacher at St. Philip’s Episcopal School where he was educated mere minutes away from Tuesday’s tragedy. In 2020 when the McConaughey family had attended the centennial celebration of the Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce, Kay said, “Uvalde was the most perfect place to raise children.”

“As Americans, Texans, mothers and fathers, it’s time we re-evaluate, and renegotiate our wants from our needs,” his statement continued. “We have to rearrange our values and find a common ground above this devastating American reality that has tragically become our children’s issue.”

These sentiments are consistent with McConaughey’s past remarks when he announced that, after consideration, he would not run for governor of Texas at that time even though polls showed him with a favorable advantage over both incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott (R) and Democratic hopeful Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke.

While seeking the “answer to the question of how I can be most useful in this life going forward,” he surmised, “I’ve learned that freedom comes with responsibility, and that great leaders serve…Service is taking on responsibility today, so we can have more freedom tomorrow. Service is making the better choice for you and me.”

McConaughey continued by asserting, “This is an epidemic we can control, and whichever side of the aisle we may stand on, we all know we can do better. We must do better. Action must be taken so that no parent has to experience what the parents in Uvalde and the others before them have endured.”

Though the actor has postured to the left while claiming to support the Second Amendment by speaking at the March for Our Lives rally in 2018  calling for “assault weapons” bans, magazine capacity restrictions, and stricter background checks, his instinct countered Biden’s who jumped at the chance to demonize the gun lobby.

In closing, he offered up his heartfelt prayers to those impacted by the atrocity committed by the suspect, “And to those who dropped off their loved ones today not knowing it was goodbye, no words can comprehend or heal your loss, but if prayers can provide comfort, we will keep them coming.”

  1. Actor acting as trutstworthy as a professional liar lying. I wonder if he is another of Klaus’s World Economic Forum ‘young global leaders”…

  2. Ever notice how kids and early 20ish folks have their heads buried in their devices? Ever make eye contact with them? Rarely, I’d bet. They don’t even speak to each other anymore without their fingers. They cannot communicate as humans alone, they cannot seem to participate with humanity. Early on, they were given trophies for merely appearing somewhere, they can’t handle their feelings being hurt. Look at them and tell me that they’re all well adjusted and that nothing is missing there. They’re becoming less human by the day, slipping away from empathy to apathy, unless it effects them solely. What a loss.

  3. I agree with Matthew! No one wants to step on the right to bear arms, law abiding, mentally stable and responsible people should have that right! But something needs to be done about the ability of mentally unstable
or maniacal evil people being able to buy guns or even have guns around these people! We all need to be responsible to make sure innocent children and adults are not being murdered anywhere by these killers! Anyone who intentionally buys a gun to go on a shooting spree to kill as many as he can is not a sane person. That means there is usually signs that family members, friends (if they have them), Doctors, all see and need to report these people to Authorities! We also, right now, hire armed guards to be at all entrances and exits to schools. This schools’ doors were all locked, so how did he get in? And finally, we need to have mental health facilities open up again! There are many people who should be living in these facilities and getting the care and help they need! These facilities should also be monitored very closely for admission errors and abuse!
I watched Schumer running his mouth today, and as usual, he was blaming Republicans for not coming together and fixing this! The Democrats have been in control for awhile now and the only thing I see is ALL politicians spending our money on everything except what is actually needed! The Politicians are not going to fix this! It is up to all of us to do what is needed now! Rest in Peace Our Angels🥺

    1. Closed State mental institutions and broken involuntary commitment laws are why we have mass homelessness and mass shootings while we had had virtually none to speak of when we had no modern “gun” control laws.

Institutionalize the insane, leave the rest of us alone.

  4. It’s really simple folks…

Put back prayer to God in our schools
    AND
Teach the Ten Commandments to our children starting in pre-school.

All of our troubles started when we kicked God out of our schools.
We need to ask Him back and make a place in our schools for Him again.

    1. We need to cure what the government has done with all their social engineering thru laws and taxes to fix the problem. We need our guns to protect ourselves from them!!!!

  5. The question remains the same and still unanswered. Why do we have armed security at every government entity except schools? Are airports more important? NO. Are court buildings more important? NO. Nothing is more important than our children. Armed security would not only reduce deaths if a school should be attacked. But maybe even more important armed security would act as a deterrent to attacking schools.

    1. I think it would provide some excellent protection if these guards were experienced veterans. Responsive, reliable, trained, courteous, smart. Maybe an idiot with a weapon they’re incapable of respecting comes up against someone whose slept with their weapon and knows it inside and out would cause them to hesitate. And please hold any issues about veterans with PTSD, it’s understood in this regard.

  6. Hey BizPacReview!
When are you going to stop the crap coming through your site from the bots?

  7. Once again we have tragically proven that we are failing to be responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us.”

I doubt if Matthew has ever read the Constitution and Bill of Rights. He clearly doesn’t understand them.

Maybe he should stick to making mediocre movies. He sounds like a dimwit.

    1. Vito_C – I think he said exactly the opposite. Our freedom gave us the right to bear arms. Responsibly! No one needs rocket launchers, grenades, machine guns, AK-47s or the right to buy any of the sort before age 21, at least. MAGA 2022!

      1. It’s not your call to decide what I need be it an AK/AR/HiCap Mag or even a rocket launcher.

      2. No one needs to drive over 55mph, govern all engines. 17 year olds enlist in the Marine Corps and die for our freedoms. If you want absolute safety check yourself into a locked ward of a mental institution, the rest of us will just have to tough it out risking the sky falling on us in free society.

  8. What we have as the Governor of Texas just pointed out is a mental health issue in this country. This mental health issue has it’s roots in the devaluing of human life. That all of us are created in the image of God is not being ground into our society. That God sees value in every human life is not being taught in our public institutions. This creates first a spiritual issue which leads to a mental health issue.

The Governor was quick to point out that 18 year olds have been able to buy guns in the state of Texas for 60+ years. Yet it is only in recent times that we see this happening in Texas. Why? That California, New York and Chicago have some of the strictest gun laws on record. Yet more people are killed almost every week in Chicago and areas of California and New York than those killed in states with more common sense and Constitutional gun laws. Why?

The answer he stressed was a mental health issue, I would add that until we can bring God back into the public square, especially public education, we will continua to experience a worsening of the spiritual issue which will precipitate the mental health issue.

The end answer to this spiritual/mental problem is two fold the revival of Christ body, the Church, and it’s influence in our society. May God bring it. And second the reintergrating of God and His influence in the public square as it was back when this was not as big a problem as it is today. Until then only expect it to get worse.

    1. It is not being taught because a large number of people do not value all human life. The only value votes, money, power and submission of all to do as they direct. That is our problem and it won’t be fixed unless MAGA Republicans take over congress and then white house. Or we have another civil war. These people often claim to be Christians, I never met a true Christian who said what in God’s name or for God’s sake, let alone one who uttered it several times in a few minutes on camera. I mean he might as well be saying G damn. Of course he is not a true Christian so..

    2. Has the shooter been tested for the presence of psychotropic drugs?

      Thought not.

  9. Stop giving these dimwitted celebs a forum. No one cares what they feel about anything. Ignore them.

    1. Matthew is pretending the he’s a politician and is trying to sound profound.

  10. More gun laws will not keep guns out of the hands of the mentally deranged or criminals. Guns do not kill people only people kill people. Gun free zones are targets of opportunity for individuals bent on doing harm.

    1. This is not abouit guns. It is about how inept we are in diagnosing and dealing with mental illness. Guns are just a simple diversion from the harder, yet FAR more pervasive problem, of mental instabilities and cries for help..

  11. What we NEED is a new Commander in Chief. One that defends our borders and upholds the law. Leadership is from the top down. One that puts America first. One that knows criminals always get guns illegally and that citizens should be able to defend themselves with one. Our great Country has been sold to the highest international bidder and our own people we voted into positions of leadership are in on the trade. Sickening.

  12. Just 1 question. HOW WAS THE MURDERER STOPPED??? A GOOD PERSON WITH A GUN!!! blame the crazy person for once!!!

  13. Funny, isn’t it, how government “elitists” poured out the mandatory masks and “vaccines” for a cold/flu virus, making billions of dollars in profits while doing so.
But as for “sick” people, there isn’t any money in the public coffers to be spent on who they see as sick losers. Mental problems?? Let ’em live on the street — your street, that is. New Yorkers will remember the closure of Willowbrook state school.
It would seem that closing down the mental institutions for lack of money to be spent on care and upkeep and professional help for sick peons was one way to make sure our tax dollars went to (and through) the right shareholders and their friends in office.

    1. Clara you are spot on. I worked as a volunteer in a state Mental Hospital in the 70’s before they closed them all down. Maybe there were some isolated abuses but the fact is that there are millions of people who are mentally ill and potentially dangerous and incapable of living a normal life in society. Leaving them unattended on the street or buying them space in hotels just turns them into criminal ghettos. It’s inhumane and as a society we can do better.

Secondly, after Sandy Hook there were many simple solutions recommended that were ignored that could have prevented this from happening again. Schools are “soft” targets and that’s why the criminally insane select them.

      1. Lock down all entrances except one after school is open and have that protected with armed security and a metal detector.
      2. Not mandatory, but allow any teacher who has the appropriate training to concealed “carry”. A good guy with a gun is the only one who always stops the bad guy with a gun.
      3. Review and discard all the Obama era school policies that prohibited schools from expelling and/or sending violent students to juvenile detention centers. This is/was a stupid “equity” policy because of so called disparate impact in minorities. Violent students have no place in our public schools.

These are simple and not very expensive policies, especially considering that during COVID the government sent BILLIONS to schools. For what? The simple truth is that the government ignores the dozens of children being murdered every day on our city streets, but uses and politicizes school shootings to try to bring about gun confiscation from law abiding citizens.

      1. An excellent list. Thanks.

        This bears repeating:

“Review and discard all the Obama era school policies that prohibited schools from expelling and/or sending violent students to juvenile detention centers. This is/was a stupid “equity” policy because of so called disparate impact in minorities. Violent students have no place in our public schools.”

I would add – We need to establish a database of everyone who is using psychotropic drugs. A lot of these people are ticking time bombs.

      2. Correct! We can send $40 BILLION to Ukraine (which we shouldn’t be involved with) but not a dollar to protect our children in government buildings. Declaring schools to be “gun free zones” in all honesty just makes them a target rich environment for the crazies who don’t have to worry about anyone shooting back.

    2. Years ago, Chicago closed the Dunning mental health facility. They immediately had a big jump in homeless problems that has plagued them ever since.

  14. As long as we have a culture of death and disregard for other human beings (abortion and euthanasia), this crap will go on. What’s the difference between killing children in the womb up to the moment of birth, and killing them in elementary school? Not much, only about eight years.

    1. And those hypocrites are yelling about pro-lifers not caring because of gun laws, excuse me but weren’t they just fighting to murder children in and even out of the womb?

  15. It is a tragedy and much more to be learned before any remedy can be discussed. Just note the rhetoric that will be dumped on everyone before the facts are known.

    1. They can’t even decide how many and what type of guns the shooter used. 2 rifles? 1 rifle? 1 rifle and one handgun?
