The Lincoln Memorial was forced to briefly close on Saturday after a celebration by graduating students from a “local university” left behind an ungodly mess including broken bottles along with spilled alcoholic beverages, sending cleanup crews into action to clear the debris before reopening the area.
It was an ugly display from those who will soon be working in positions of influence and importance and while the National Park Service wasn’t specific on which school was at fault, many on social media were quick to suggest that it was Georgetown University, the elitist institute of higher education in the nation’s capital city.
The Saturday morning, the NPS posted an announcement to Twitter that, “The Lincoln Memorial is closed this morning following a local university graduation celebration that left litter, broken bottles and spilled wine and champagne covering the steps. We will reopen as soon as the area has been cleaned and made safe.”

“The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., was shut down Saturday morning after a crowd of seniors from Georgetown University left broken bottles and spilled wine on the monument’s steps,” Fox News reported, “Hundreds of students had gathered to watch the sunrise Saturday after the senior ball on Friday. A few took a dip in the Reflecting Pool.”
Anthony Tilghman, a freelance reporter for the local weekly African-American newspaper Washington Informer tweeted images of broken bottles with the Reflecting Pool in the background and that “It is reported to be students from Georgetown University.”

Anyone who defends Georgetown university seniors for leaving the Lincoln Memorial a mess, is a disgusting commie!! This is our future, Fucktards who learned that “If I don’t clean it up,, someone else will” and they don’t have to be respectful#georgetownseniors

I’m not surprised that the liberal elite graduating from Georgetown Univ trashed the Lincoln Memorial today at their graduation ceremony. No respect for our country of history. Our Nations future. Pathetic https://t.co/wA13BaJrZV

Still waiting for @Georgetown University to apologize for its graduates’ disgusting graduation celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. They were obviously never taught respect for those we hold in honor.

Too bad your grads decided to celebrate by trashing the Lincoln Memorial. I guess you can’t teach class.
— Bitch on Wheels (@norwickdrive) May 21, 2022
why in the world is a university allowed to hold a graduation on a National Monument?? They have a campus – use it! Make those graduates come back and clean it up. Horrible that this happened.

The disrespect @Georgetown students showed at the Lincoln Memorial is beyond disappointing. It is an indictment of selfishness of a so called educated group. Is this what this former hallowed University is turning out now?#GeorgetownUniversity

Not a good look for Georgetown. Who is paying for the mess you made on the national mall and the Lincoln Memorial? Either ask your graduates and attendees to not litter or have your staff clean it up.

Washington D.C. CBS affiliate WUSA reached out to Georgetown about the rumors.
According to a Georgetown spokesperson, “We are monitoring the concerning and disappointing activity at the Lincoln Memorial. While Georgetown is one of several institutions celebrating graduation ceremonies this weekend, we have had no University-sponsored events at or around the Lincoln Memorial. We expect all members of our community to be responsible citizens of our campus and our city and be respectful of the history and institutions of Washington, D.C.”
The mess left by the disrespectful students was soon cleaned up, “Thanks to our facilities staff for the quick cleanup this morning. The Lincoln Memorial is open. We appreciate your patience,” the NPS tweeted.
