Trump seizes on Musk’s Twitter stall

Former President Donald Trump said on Friday that Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter will never go through, and either way, people should sign up for his Truth Social competitor.

The statement was made in response to a tweet by the Tesla and SpaceX CEO. The free-speech champion tweeted to his nearly 94 million followers that the $44 billion deal is “temporarily on hold pending details supporting calculation that spam/fake accounts do indeed represent less than 5% of users.”

The quirky and visionary richest man in the world, and chocolate milk fan, acknowledged, however, that he is “still committed” to buying the social media platform.

Some observers suggest that this is just a negotiating tactic by Musk to get a discount on the deal. On Saturday, Musk joked that “Whoever thought owning the libs would be cheap never tried to acquire a social media company!”

At an Austin, Texas, rally on Saturday, Trump said that “I don’t believe [Musk] is gonna buy Twitter because you have so many fake accounts, the bots, all of the different things. I think it is going to be very interesting. And he’s got some problems because he bought some stock that he shouldn’t have bought; he’s got a lot of problems with Twitter. But Twitter has a lot of problems,” Trump claimed.

Ever the salesman, Trump plugged his new platform Truth Social, which he insisted “blows Twitter away…we’re driving the radical left crazy — we have something called Truth…”

On his Truth Social account, Trump similarly insisted that “There is no way Elon Musk is going to buy Twitter at such a ridiculous price, especially since realizing it is a company largely based on BOTS or Span Accounts…”

He also claimed that Musk would be “long gone” if it wasn’t for the onerous $1 billion penalty for backing out of the transaction.

In a follow-up Truth Social post, Trump declared that “only a stupid person would buy Twitter for that price, and Elon is not a stupid person. Besides, how can the deal go through when he may have illegally bought his shares?”

Trump was likely alluding to the news that Musk is reportedly under an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for missing a paperwork deadline when he was buying up stock on the social media platform.

Separately, Musk — who is a political independent — has vowed to unban the ex-POTUS but has suggested that a less divisive candidate should seek the presidency in 2024.

Musk has also disclosed he got pinged by Twitter’s lawyers for summarizing the results of his random sampling of fake accounts.

“Twitter legal called to complain that I violated their [nondisclosure agreement] by revealing the bot check sample size is 100! This actually happened,” he wrote.

“Musk has made eliminating bot accounts, which promote a particular product or point of view incessantly using similar messages across various profiles, a cornerstone of his pending $44 billion takeover,” the Daily Mail noted.

Musk is advocating an open-source approach to the Twitter algorithm as part of implementing greater transparency on the platform that has faced allegations of censorship, shadow-banning, and other throttling techniques applied to those users who don’t conform to a left-wing, Silicon Valley narrative.

  1. you have to have a cell phone that takes apps to get on the trump platform. however it will be available soon for laptops.

  2. Trump is right again, Musk won’t buy Twitter, because he is not stupid.

  3. Don’t count Musk out. He’s not the kind to let a few speed bumps slow him down.

  4. Musk should be able to back out of that billion dollar committment if they lied or misrepresented themselves.
