‘Cascadia’ might offer respite for beleaguered liberals

Several years ago, I stumbled upon one of the most insightful books in my memory. Colin Woodward’s “American Nations.” American nations segmented North America into several nations based on their initial entry into the continent.

While the Maine-based Woodward acknowledged that many of the decedents of the original settlers had long since migrated, their initial imprints remain today. Significant is that Woodward’s nations cross international lines.

Canadian Atlantic provinces share the same nation status as New England: “Yankeedom.” Ditto for most of British Columbia, Western Oregon, and Western Washington which share membership in “the Left Coast.” North Dakota, Montana and Idaho, along with Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta are members of the “Far West Family.”

Surprisingly, Ontario is composed of the same footprint as northern Ohio, northern Indiana, northern Illinois and Iowa. This nation, labeled “the Midlands,” boasted large numbers of German settlers who originally entered through Pennsylvania.

Today, these populations share major commonalities, most specifically language, race and religion. Canada has 37 million residents. Almost nine million live in largely French-speaking Quebec. Quebec is part of another American nation accurately named, “New France.” This distinction is shared by most of South Louisiana.

Nearly five million Canadians live in British Columbia, west of the 120th parallel of longitude. This is the “Left Coast” region which actually spans as far south as California. However, for this illustration, we will confine it to the proposed nation of “Cascadia.”

A number of maps have been drawn of Cascadia. In this post, we define it as Oregon and Washington, west of the 120th parallel and north of Coos County, Oregon. This is in accordance with Tim Draper’s proposed “state of Jefferson” map.

The defined map of Cascadia would be home to roughly 12.5 million people in an area the size of Texas and New Mexico combined. It is a beautiful spot on the planet.

This is a land rich in natural resources, ranging from timber to fishing to hydroelectric power. The demographic makeup is approximately 91% White, 5% Asian, 1% Hispanic, 1% African, 1% Indigenous, and 1% other.

Cascadia would be renowned worldwide as a progressive hotbed for self-expression and individualization. Its embracement of socialism and environmentalism suggests that Cascadia would be the consummate white liberal’s paradise! It’s likely that the new government’s first ploy would be to lure the publishing industry from New York and London. Much of Hollywood has already moved to Vancouver.

Writings from and about the 100-year-old Cascadia idea suggest that this proposed nation would target Northern and Western Europe, as well as the U.S. and Canada, for its immigrants. The emphasis would be on education, healthcare and technology. English speakers with advanced degrees would receive preference.

Could Cascadia survive? And, assuming that it was allowed to create itself unmolested, what countries would align with it? Nobody truly knows! We do know that many of its more affluent residents fled Hong Kong after Great Britain’s lease expired.  These people are no friends of the CCP!

It is common knowledge that the Soviet Union predicted American Balkanization seventy years ago. In today’s divided America, two reactions could take place:

The country would see such action as secession and unite to quell a possible threat.

The country would consider further Balkanization.

Under normal conditions, the latter would seem unlikely. Historically, it would be a near certainty that the nation would be outraged if a tiny part of it, said “Sayanora.” Times may be changing, however.

Almost a year ago, the Associated Press reported a poll that reflected 52% of “Red” America and 41% of “Blue” America, saw a “friendly divorce” as the best alternative for a bitterly divided nation. This should accelerate further with an overturn of Roe v. Wade! Yet, it may even be more complicated than merely “red” versus “blue.”

A large, if not an overwhelming percentage of Democrats who voted for Bernie Sanders believe that the Vermont Senator was defrauded from the nomination, both in 2016 and 2020. Sometimes referred to as the “Bernie Bros,” these Americans actually share three common beliefs with Trump supporters. (a) A disdain for endless wars in locations thousands of miles from our shores, (b) A resolve to enforce protective tariffs as a means of discouraging offshore outsourcing. (d) a desire for a corruption-free government.

Making a clean break with the Democrat establishment is not an unattractive thought for these Americans. Cascadia would be seen as an opportunity to create their long-sought Utopian world. Absent would be the power brokers who have held their party under tight control for decades.

The formation of Cascadia would have a ripple effect throughout the United States and Canada. A steady stream, if not an overwhelming tsunami of immigration applicants could be expected. Included would be the highly educated. Institutes of higher learning would spring up like mushrooms following a rainstorm up and down the Cascadian coast!

Depending on tax handling, the three major Cascadian cities, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver would become popular destination sites for multi-national corporations. Housing would be a major concern. The coastal areas would boast some of the most expensive real estate on the planet. Currently, Vancouver is the world’s third most expensive city.

“Red” America might actually think that Cascadia was a great idea! For two totally unrelated reasons!

Much of liberal America would be siphoned into Cascadia by choice. The precedent of Balkanization would be established.

A great majority of “red” America would see the union as voluntary. Encroachment by a massive, oppressive federal government is their greatest fear.
