Nunes says Trump ‘encouraged’ Musk to buy Twitter, ‘take on tech tyrants’; Elon remembers it differently

Truth Social CEO Devin Nunes appeared on Fox Business’s “Varney & Co.” Thursday and told host Stuart Varney that former President Donald Trump “encouraged” Tesla CEO Elon Musk to buy Twitter, proclaiming that someone has to stand up to Big Tech.

Varney asked Nunes if Musk “turn(s) Twitter around. If he does, where does that leave Truth Social, which you run?”

“We’re all for it,” Nunes commented on the purchase of Twitter. “President Trump basically, before Elon Musk bought it, actually said to go and buy it because the goal of our company is to build a community where people are in a family-friendly, safe environment. [It’s] very much different than Twitter, and that’s why we encouraged Elon Musk to buy it because someone has to take on tech tyrants.”

“Donald Trump wanted to make sure the American people got their voice back, and the Internet was open, and that is what we are doing,” he added. “People like Elon Musk doing what he’s doing, we’re definitely in favor of it,” he added.

Musk responded to a New York Post story over Nunes’s claims: “This is false. I’ve had no communication, directly or indirectly, with Trump, who has publicly stated that he will be exclusively on Truth Social.”

Truth Social has not been up and running for very long. Right now, it’s only available for iPhone users but the company expects to have the app ready for Android users by the end of May according to Nunes. Leftist media outlets have been all over it claiming it is buggy and that Trump is rarely on the app but it is hugely popular among conservatives and stands to be a major factor in upcoming elections.

The company is undergoing a merger between Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) and Digital World Acquisition Corp (DWAC).

Trump has said that he will not return to Twitter but will instead communicate via Truth Social. That will most likely be the case once the merger is finalized.

“I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH,” Trump told Fox News. “I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH.”

Nunes contends that Truth Social will combine all of the features one sees on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. And he proudly stated that none of the social media platform’s engineering was built by “Big Tech.”

Despite Nunes’ claim the two platforms really aren’t competing, shares of Digital World Acquisition Corp. are down more than 16 percent since Musk first disclosed his Twitter stake.

Musk noted in April that Truth Social was leading the Apple App Store’s most-downloaded list. He also poked fun at the app’s name.

“Truth Social (terrible name) exists because Twitter censored free speech,” Musk tweeted. “Should be called Trumpet instead!”

Musk’s purported goal in purchasing Twitter is to protect “free speech” on the social media platform. He has criticized the company for having a left-leaning political bias and wants to ostensibly eradicate censorship on Twitter.

Musk has also suggested a range of changes to the platform, including authenticating all users, opening up the source code, and potentially charging companies and governments to use Twitter.

  1. I do not trust nines as far as I can spit.
To me ,he’s a stinking ,back stabbing rhino ,snake in the grass
Like Romney and all the other bullshit rhinos .

  2. Misunderstanding is what it is, I think I recall Trump had tweeted about encouraging “go ahead and buy it” that’s far different from believing Trump and Elon talked. But I also have to agree with Musk- Truth Social is a goofy name.
