A prominent Democrat senator has sent shockwaves through the political world by  providing aid to a Republican House member seeking reelection.

Specifically, West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat, has helped incumbent West Virginia Rep. David McKinley, a Republican, in his reelection bid by appearing in one of his 2022 campaign ads.

“I’ve always said if I can’t go home and explain it, I can’t vote for it, and that’s why I opposed ‘Build Back Better.’ For Alex Mooney and his out-of-state supporters to suggest David McKinley supported ‘Build Back Better’ is an outright lie,” Manchin says in the ad.

“David McKinley has always opposed reckless spending because it doesn’t make sense for West Virginia. Alex Mooney has proven he’s all about Alex Mooney, but West Virginians know David McKinley is all about us.”

Listen:

So who is Alex Mooney? He’s a fellow West Virginia lawmaker and Republican who’s competing with McKinley in a primary election next week.

At the moment, both men holds seats in the U.S. House. However, thanks to a  sizable population loss registered in the 2020 U.S. Census, both of their districts are being combined into one, so one of them has to go.

This, of course, still leaves the question of why Manchin would help a Republican. The reason why, it appears, is because former President Donald Trump has endorsed Mooney.

“Representative Alex Mooney has done an outstanding job as Congressman in West Virginia. In fact, he recently opposed the horrendous Biden Administration’s ‘Non-Infrastructure’ plan, and he opposed the January 6th Committee, also known as the Unselect Committee of partisan hacks and degenerates,” Trump announced in a statement issued last November.

“Alex has been strong on Crime, Borders, our great Military, and a champion for our Veterans. He will always protect our Second Amendment, and of particular importance is the fact that Alex fights for energy and beautiful clean coal—and he will never stop. Congressman Alex Mooney has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”

That same month, he released a separate statement slamming several Republicans, including McKinley, as “RINOs, sellouts, and known losers.”

“Any interest from good and SMART America First Republican Patriots to run primary campaigns against Representatives Tom Rice, John Katko, Don Bacon, Don Young, Fred Upton (challenge accepted), Andrew Garbarino, Peter Meijer (challenge accepted), David McKinley (challenge accepted), Nancy Mace, Jaime Herrera Beutler (challenge accepted) and Chris Smith? You will have my backing!” he said.

“Gonzalez, Kinzinger, and Reed already QUIT, they are out of politics, hopefully for good. Warmonger Liz Cheney (challenge accepted) is on the SKIDS with a 19% approval rating. Saving America starts by saving the GOP from RINOs, sellouts, and known losers! In the Senate, the ‘Disaster from Alaska,’ Lisa Murkowski (challenge accepted), must go. There is ‘almost’ nobody worse!”

The only problem is that, by obtaining the endorsement of a Democrat, McKinley has, Mooney says, proven that he is indeed a RINO.

It doesn’t help, the combative lawmaker tweeted Saturday, that McKinley voted for both “Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion non-infrastructure bill” and “the sham January 6th witch hunt investigation against Donald Trump and his allies.”

Current data suggests that Mooney is on track for a resounding victory.

“Mooney has outraised McKinley this cycle, hauling in $3.7 million to his opponent’s $2 million through April 20, per their pre-primary filings with the Federal Election Commission,” according to CNN.

“The winner would be the overwhelming favorite in the general election for the 2nd Congressional District, which covers the northern half of the state and would have backed Trump by 37 points in 2020.”

Those are big numbers. Meanwhile, all that McKinley has going for him is the endorsement of a Democrat.

Nevertheless, the latest polls showed McKinley in the lead, amazingly enough.

“According to the findings of a poll conducted by North Star Opinion Research and sent to the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce on Friday, McKinley maintains a slight lead over Mooney in both a five-way race and a one-on-one race,” WVNEWS reported in late March.
