House Republicans pummeled Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Thursday as they demanded answers for the catastrophic situation at the nation’s southern border, a rapidly deteriorating situation for which he shares responsibility with President Joe Biden.
With the administration set to formally end Title 42, the emergency health order put into place by President Donald J. Trump and continued by his successor to mitigate the spread of COVID, and hundreds of thousands expected to pour across the border, Republicans were loaded for bear when Mayorkas made his trip to Capitol Hill.
A federal judge has temporarily blocked the administration from opening the floodgates but it’s likely only a matter of time until the swarm will begin, overwhelming resources to efficiently process the new arrivals and allowing criminals into the country.
One Republican who cranked up the heat on the DHS boss was Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee who hammered Mayorkas, suggesting that there is a reason why the border has been an abject disaster since Biden took up residence in the White House.
“It’s intentional, it’s intentional, it has to be,” Jordan said “The chaos on our southern border is not an accident, it’s deliberate. It’s on purpose, it’s by design.”

“President Biden on day one said there’ll be a moratorium on deportations, he ended remain in Mexico, he terminated agreements with Northern Triangle Countries and he stopped building the wall. Those policies, done intentionally have led to all kinds of bad outcomes,” Jordan added.
In another fiery exchange, the congressman tried to get an answer on whether the migrants who were on the terrorist watch list when crossing the border have been released.
“Forty two illegal immigrants were encountered at our border are on the terrorist and no-fly list, are any of them still in our country?” Jordan asked as Democrats tried to prevent him from getting an answer.
“This is an important question for this committee,” Jordan said, refusing to be cut off. “Are any of them still in our country?”
Mayorkas dodged, “Congressman, I will deliver to you a response with respect….” but Jordan wasn’t having it.
“No, no, no, that’s a simple question” he persisted, “are terrorists, people on the terrorist watch list, no-fly list, are they still in the United States that you’ve encountered on the border?”
“Congressman, some of them may be still in detention,” the DHS chief replied.
“Have any of them been released? Have any of them been released?” Jordan demanded as Democrats again tried to throw a lifeline to Mayorkas, this time sparing him from the tenacious Ohioan.
Other committee Republicans called for accountability.
“He has lost TOTAL operational control of the border,” Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs wrote on Twitter. “Mayorkas should be impeached or resign immediately.”

Rep. Clay Higgins of Louisiana called for Mayorkas to resign and save the nation “the pain of your impeachment,” a sign of what could be coming if, as expected, Republicans retake the House in November.
.@RepClayHiggins to DHS Secretary Mayorkas: "I ask you as a man, own this thing. […] Step away from your talking points and speak to the American people. We're losing our country down there. We need you to resign. Save the country the pain of your impeachment." pic.twitter.com/sdt2wrkSY0

Congressman Chip Roy of Texas confronted Mayorkas with images of a mobile morgue or, as he called it, “a body trailer” that is being used by counties in the southern part of the state where dead bodies of migrants are piling up.

Throughout the questioning, Mayorkas maintained his smug demeanor, knowing that he is untouchable, unaccountable and completely supported by Biden and the Democrats.
