NY fans hurl debris at opposing team: ‘Those aren’t Yankee fans! Hooligans!’

A thrilling come from behind victory by the New York Yankees in Saturday’s MLB contest was tarnished by the actions of a number of unruly fans who pelted members of the Cleveland Guardians with debris.

With the home team trailing by two runs in the ninth inning and down to their last strike, recently acquired shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa swatted a 100 mph fastball thrown by Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase, bringing the tying run across the plate but rookie outfielder Steven Kwan collided with the wall, prompting trainers to rush to his aid.

During the break in the action, something happened when fans in the right-field bleachers were confronted by Guardians players with right fielder Oscar Mercado pointing at the stands while center fielder Myles Straw scaled the wall to have a word with one of the crowd as verbal abuse rained down.

Mercado later said that some fans were “celebrating Kwan getting hurt.”

After play resumed, pinch hitter Gleyber Torres crushed a line drive into right-center, bringing home the winning run in a 5-4 victory for the Yankees.

Things then turned ugly when some threw trash including beer cans at Mercado and Straw who were chasing the ball, prompting members of the Yankees to rush onto the field to intervene.

Longtime Yankees broadcaster John Sterling called the action on the game winning play as well as the actions of the fans whose actions he denounced as ruining a great victory.

“I think that’s disgraceful! That’s Disgraceful!” Sterling said. “That’s not Yankee Stadium! Those aren’t Yankee fans! Hooligans!”

“I don’t think people can throw stuff at our players on the field,” said Cleveland Manager Terry Francona. “That’s never going to be OK.”

“You certainly don’t want to put anyone in danger,” added Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “I love the intensity, but you can’t be throwing stuff out on the field,”

“I didn’t know what was going on, but that can’t happen,” Kiner-Falefa said. “I love the atmosphere, I love the fans, I love everything about them, but we win with class.”

Twitter reacted to the incident, with many painting all Yankee fans with a broad brush.

In the locker room after the game, Guardians outfielder Mercado gave his account of what went down to reporters.

“One came right at my face and I caught it,” he said, “It was beer cans, they still had beer inside so honestly, like I said, you can celebrate, you can chirp all you want during the game but don’t try to get people hurt, that’s not how things work.”

It was the first trip to Yankee Stadium for the Guardians after the team changed their name from the Cleveland Indians, surrendering to “woke” activists who deemed the longtime nickname as racist, joining the Washington Redskins on the left’s trophy wall.

  1. As a professional Yankees-hater, since the mid-’50s, could I just say that it is not OK to throw anything onto the field, regardless of whose park you are in. And yes, many of us are professional Yankees-haters because they have been so successful. Whatever, DON’T THROW STUFF ONTO THE FIELD.
