Axios frets over why more people of color are buying guns: ‘Could spell trouble for Democrats’

Axios published an unusual “report” Saturday seemingly lamenting the rise in gun ownership among minorities because of the risk it allegedly poses to them, and because of the risk it definitely poses to the Democrat Party.

Right off the bat, the ostensible “report” begins with a statement seething in what critics say is the soft bigotry of low expectations.

“People of color are buying guns at higher rates than ever before, even as many acknowledge that they might not be able to enjoy their Second Amendment rights in the same way as white Americans,” the first sentence reads.

Axios offers no polling data to substantiate the theory that “many” minority gun owners believe the Second Amendment doesn’t fully apply to them.

The “report” continues by trying to explain the rise in gun purchases.

“Heightened violence, including new homicide records, a rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and national attention to police brutality, have pushed more Black, Latino and Asian Americans to seek out firearms as a form of self-protection,” it reads.

Regarding attacks on Asians, Axios predictably cites the white Atlanta spa shooter as its lone example while ignoring the abundance of black-on-Asian assaults that comprise the majority of anti-Asian hate crimes.

The “report” then drops the latest numbers on minority gun ownership.

“Retailer surveys conducted by NSSF showed that between 2019 and 2020, there was a 58% increase in African Americans buying guns, 49% increase in Hispanic Americans buying guns, 43% increase in Asian Americans buying firearms,” it reads.

The rates dropped only slightly between 2020 and 2021:

To its credit, Axios then admits that the “Defund the Police” movement spearheaded by the Democrat Party contributed to Latinos, for their part, purchasing more weapons.

“The Defund the Police movement, which aims to shift resources from police to other social services, has made some Latino immigrants wary, too, said Gabby Franco, a Venezuelan firearms instructor who has worked with Latinos in many of her classes,” its report reads.

“Many come from countries with high crime rates and have firsthand experience with underfunded police, she added. ‘It’s like, for me to pursue my dreams, I need to make sure that I stay alive,’ Franco told Axios. That means making the most of the rights they may not have had in their home countries.”

But Axios then throws away any built-up goodwill by once again resorting to the soft bigotry of low expectations.

“Yes, but: People of color, especially Black people, ‘don’t have the ability to access that right in the same way,’ said Daniel Harawa, Washington University of St. Louis law professor,” the “report” continues.

“Because they’re more likely to be perceived as a threat due to stereotypes around race, ‘it creates this kind of complication where folks want to be able to protect themselves … but then exercising that right could have very real and in fact deadly consequences.’ Jefferson, however, pointed out that for Black Americans, exercising any right is a risk.”

This talking point left critics wondering for whom exactly is black Americans exercising their rights, particularly their right to own a gun, a risk?

The final sentence of the report seemed to contain the answer:

“The big picture: That more people of color are exercising their Second Amendment rights could spell trouble for Democrats, who already suffered losses among these demographics in key battleground states in 2020.”

Some critics argued that it’s as if the Democrat Party wants minorities to remain “helpless for some reason.”

Regardless, both polling data and the facts about increased gun purchases among minorities suggest that Democrats do indeed need to worry.

  1. Marxist Democratic Communists have exposed themselves like never before. Defund the Police = Death in Minority Communities, where Democratic Gun Control Laws have abolished the 2nd Amendment. Minorities stacked up in crime ridden Housing Projects aka modern Democratic Plantations, are dying in record numbers.

  2. First they were called N!@@#&$ then Blacks , then African Americans, then colored people and now people of color. What’s next?
Most of my friends prefer Black because it’s accurate and avoids a whole bunch of confusion

  3. socialistdems are the racist if your legal then any one can buy a gun more the legal the better fjb

  4. Read the article and it sure made it seem that blacks do not have the same intelligence as whites when it comes to most things, especially guns. Bigoted and racist is the best description of the article FJB

  5. Thanks to the second Amendment, ALL American citizens have a right to self-protection…regardless of their pigmentation.

    1. If most lib’s even sees a gun (any type)(except on policeman), They freak out: Hand one to a libby (bad idea) is equivalent to watching a monkey “_ucking a football

  6. You defund the Police, and you leave no choice for the people, law-abiding, to protect themselves. What did you expect?

    1. Police should not be the 1st line of defense. As a retired NYPD Cop most of the time we get there only to take crime scene photographs and remove the bodies. You have a God Giving Duty to defend yourself and your family. Yes, I said Duty not right.

  7. I suspect the democrats are concerned only because these guns are being purchased LEGALLY! If they were being stolen and then sold on the streets to gangstas and common criminals, No Prob!
