Ellen K. Pao, the former CEO of social news aggregation site Reddit, shared a horribly derogatory message she presumably received in order to try to paint those who believe in free speech with the same broad brush.
Apparently, Pao believes that if you’re a “free-speecher,” a term that she seemingly wants to make sound derogatory itself, you just want to say racist things without getting in trouble.
At the end of the day, the free-speechers really just want to be able to use racist slurs. CW: racism, immaturity, stupidity, and even more racism and extreme stupidity pic.twitter.com/tn9RgJK4jZ

In an ironic twist, she also claims that they “really don’t care about sharing new ideas or encouraging freedom other than the freedom to harass other people off the platform,” despite this being a tactic of those who oppose free speech.

Twitter wasn’t about to let her get away with her intellectual laziness, however:

This is a very ‘first world’ privileged perspective. Where I’m from, we really need free speech to, you know, express our dissent. It’s a pretty fundamental right that people have died for and continue to die for.

Trade-offs, lady.
You don’t get the free speech for free. The cost for free speech is hearing the speech you don’t like, no matter how abhorrent.
But the cost for not having free speech is expensive too.

I think it’s a bit of an exaggeration — just a bit — to proclaim the only reason people believe in free speech is they want to spout adolescent racist slurs.
I believe that, historically speaking, this concept has a somewhat broader and more substantive history than this. https://t.co/mTuyEdyUDm

“the free speechers really just want this” – countless millions of people aren’t a monolith and it’s infantile to reduce a complex issue to something so simpleminded
— Douglas (@CalbarFFC) April 6, 2022
This position really is a non-starter. The point of free speech is ensuring everyone can express themselves. And yes, “everyone” includes the seedier section of the population. Populations of countries contain the entire spectrum of ideologies, just simple reality.
