DNC chair calls Sen. Cotton a ‘little maggot-infested man’ over Ketanji Brown Jackson ‘Nazi support’ barb

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough was joined by Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison Wednesday where the pair misrepresented statements made by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) on the Senate floor to malign him as a “positively shameful” liar and a “little maggot-infested man.”

The segment on “Morning Joe” began with clips from Cotton’s Tuesday speech about his opposition to Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination to the Supreme Court, in part, because of her work as a prosecutor who voluntarily defended alleged terrorists.

When Cotton concluded his remarks suggesting Jackson may have gone to Nuremberg to defend the Nazis rather than prosecute them, Scarborough worked himself into a lather.

“That just made the ghost of Joe McCarthy blush,” he contended.

Scarborough recited portions of a March 22 piece by the Associated Press to point out the obligation that Jackson had as a public defender to take the cases that were assigned to her.

“He is twisting this so out of context. It is a wretched display for yet another Ivy League guy. Another Ivy Leaguer, who went to Harvard Law School, lying to you, acting stupid about what happens when you’re a public defender, what happens when you’re assigned a case,” he stated as he himself acted stupidly about the full remarks that Cotton had said.

“You know why you’re assigned those cases?” the host asked rhetorically, “Because the Constitution of the United States of America, which Republicans like Tom Cotton claim to defend, they carry it around in their pocket, hold up their little pocket-sized Constitutions, but don’t really give a damn about what’s inside of it!”

“Because if Tom Cotton did, he’d understand that she was doing what the Constitution of the United States guarantees every American, that lawyers will do, and that lawyers have done since the beginning of this republic,” he stated, while misrepresenting the foreign national Guantanamo detainees as American citizens. “He knows better. That’s what makes it so absolutely, positively shameful.”

“Now, it’s true that you shouldn’t judge a lawyer for being willing to take on an unpopular case,” Cotton conceded in a portion of the remarks not aired by MSNBC, “but you can certainly learn something about a lawyer from the cases they seek out. And for Judge Jackson and her friends in the liberal legal profession, these cases were not unpopular at all.”

“Morning Joe” played the next part of Cotton’s speech where he noted the cases Jackson took in her role as a public defender, with one being voluntary. But they also selectively left off his next statement where he said, “And she voluntarily filed multiple friend-of-the-court briefs on behalf of terrorists while in private practice.”

Furthermore, instead of presenting the senator’s statements on the questionable filings that Jackson had made, they jumped to his most incendiary remarks after building a narrative of vitriol. Cotton’s suggestion did not trivialize the Holocaust as the Anti-Defamation League would have one believe.

Nor did it warrant the reaction from Harrison who stated, “It shows you who this little maggot-infested man is. He does not deserve to have that pin. He doesn’t deserve to be in the United States Senate representing the good people of Arkansas.”

“He put his hand on the Bible, took an Oath of Office to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and he uses it as a play toy,” he asserted. “That is the Republican Party we see today. It is a party built on fraud, fear and fascism,” he told the panel that was perpetrating all three on a lawmakers character.

“They don’t deserve to be in power. Not because Democrats should,” Harrison attested, “but because they don’t deserve to be in power of this great nation.”
