Initial reports suggest that Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins’ stunning death Friday at a hotel in Columbia was attributable to drug abuse.
An initial forensic examination by Colombian authorities reportedly found a cornucopia of pharmaceutical and narcotic substances in Hawkins’ blood stream including antidepressants, benzodiazepines, cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin, opioids and marijuana.
Note that when prescribing antidepressants, doctors always warn patients against mixing them with alcohol and/or illegal drugs because of the unknown reactions. In this case, the unknown/unexpected reaction appears to have been death, though to be clear, Colombian authorities have thus avoided making a final determination.
“Without declaring that musician Taylor Hawkins died of an overdose, authorities in Colombia issued a statement Saturday afternoon noting that the Foo Fighters’ drummer was determined to have had 10 drugs in his system at the time of his death,” according to Variety magazine.
“The report from the attorney general of Colombia came in a tweet which said that the 50-year-old musician had antidepressants, benzodiazepines and opioids in his system, along with THC. It did not further specify the drugs that had been found, and the attorney general’s statement avoided using the word ‘overdose.'”

Semana, a well-regarded weekly Colombian magazine, reported via its own unnamed sources that, one, heroin was also found in his blood, and two, his heart had been grossly enlarged.
“Semana reported that ‘forensic doctors were shocked by the size of the drummer’s heart,’ at more than 600 grams, and believe that was a factor in Hawkins quickly succumbing to ‘a cocktail of narcotics,'” according to Variety.
Meanwhile, Colombian journalist Luis Carlos Vélez Marroquín tweeted that authorities saw a “cocaine”-looking powder in his hotel room, in addition to a number of beverages and cups, which suggests he may have had company.

There have also been reports of hallucinogens having been found in his hotel room.
Variety notes that “Hawkins was found lifeless on Friday … in a hotel north of Bogota, where he was staying in advance of a Foo Fighters concert in the area.”
According to Vélez, Hawkins had “called the front desk for help due to ‘chest pain’ before being found dead.”

Hawkins’ death follows after a life of fighting drug abuse. Marca, a Spanish daily newspaper, notes that Hawkins “suffered a heroin overdose back in 2001 during a hard party night in London.”
In an interview 18 years later with with the British magazine Kerrang!, the Foo Fighters drummer admitted that he’d taken “it too far” because he’d “believed the bulls–t myth of live hard and fast, die young.”
“I’m not here to preach about not doing drugs, because I loved doing drugs, but I just got out of control for a while and it almost got me. I was heading down a road that was going to lead to even worse paths. Whether someone’s sober, or they like a glass of wine with dinner, or they want a bottle of Jägermeister before they go on stage, or they like to smoke doobies all day long, everyone has their own path, and I took it too far,” he said.
“I’m glad it got knocked on the head at that point. I wouldn’t take anything away that I’ve done or been through either, because it’s all part of the trip and the journey. I’m trying to be as candid as I can be.”

And sadly, it appears he’d returned to doing “a lot of f–king drugs.”
Following his death, fans of Hawkins reportedly gathered outside the hotel where he’d died to pay tribute to a man they view as a legendary musician.
