Detroit’s longtime city clerk, Janice Winfrey, is running against “Squad” member Rashida Tlaib and part of her platform is that she’s packing a gun for self-protection after claiming she was threatened by a white supporter of former President Donald Trump after the 2020 presidential race.
The Democrat grandmother is now challenging Tlaib in the newly drawn 12th District, claiming that it is so unsafe she has been forced to arm herself. But the twist is that the bad guys are allegedly white and wearing red MAGA hats.
“I can’t go to the park by myself anymore and that is concerning to me,” the 62-year-old Democrat told the New York Post in an interview. She reluctantly bought a 22-caliber pistol asserting that she fears for her life.
“I would like not to have to carry the gun. I don’t want the gun in my house. I have a 2-year old granddaughter. It’s locked in a safe in a closet on the top shelf. I don’t like it. We don’t believe in that, but I have to feel safe,” disingenuously asserted Winfrey who didn’t address the rampant crime in Detroit that is not related to Trump in the least.

She has repeatedly recounted the story that after the election, a white man claiming the race was stolen menacingly approached her.
“I was walking to my neighborhood park just recovering from COVID. This big white guy comes up to me — and I live in a black community — and says, ‘Ms. Winfrey I am looking for you. Why did you allow Trump to lose?’ There was an exchange,” she recounted.
“I told him I would spit on him if he didn’t get out my face. I had COVID. That was all I had,” Winfrey grossly contended. She also claims that the situation was only resolved because a neighbor happened to drive by and then get involved. It should be noted that there does not appear to be any proof that the encounter ever happened.
Winfrey is running on an anti-crime platform against Tlaib, accusing the progressive Democrat of doing nothing to fight crime in her district. Tlaib is well-known for wanting to defund the police. She has also co-sponsored the BREATHE Act and is calling for shutting down all federal prisons over the next decade. Tlaib considers cash bail “cruel” and she supported legislation that would have emptied jails and prisons due to COVID.
Detroit Clerk Janice Winfrey confirms run in Michigan's new 12th District against @RepRashida Tlaib. All kinds of connections here: She beat Tlaib's communications director in winning 5th term as clerk in November, Winfrey also lost to late Rep. Conyers in '16 who Tlaib replaced.

“I haven’t seen anything that she has done as it relates to public safety and gun violence. I know she has marched with BLM and that’s good, but have you talked with our chief of police or met with law enforcement officers? Have you made suggestions? When you say defund [the police], what are you really saying?” the Democrat opponent asked.
Winfrey contends that she has raised over $125,000 in a month since she decided to run. She’s also going to appeal to the Congressional Black Caucus for support.
“I support Israel. I support peace. I know that Israel is our only ally in the Middle East and I also know that Israel brings a lot to the table. We need Israel, just like they need us,” Winfrey stated. She also claims to oppose the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel which Tlaib has openly promoted.
“Janice Winfrey is going to mount a serious effort. She’s won four times citywide and is putting together the resources to mount an aggressive campaign. She’s also spent the last years relentlessly working her district while her opponent seems more to be relentlessly working the national press corp,” Chris Coffey, who is co-CEO of Tusk Strategies and a veteran Democratic political consultant in Detroit, told the New York Post.
Winfrey has served five terms as city clerk in Detroit but is running far behind the Squad member. Tlaib will be seeking her third term in the runoff.
