Even after so many years, members of the left-wing establishment still remain unable to take a joke, especially if the joke is coming from former President Donald Trump.
Trump’s latest joke was reportedly made to donors. He said that the Biden administration should take America’s F-22 planes, “put the Chinese flag on them and bomb the shit out” out of Russia.
Then the administration should “say, China did it, we didn’t do, China did it, and then they start fighting with each other and we sit back and watch.”
Despite the remark obviously being a joke designed to gin up laughter, it triggered the same sort of unhinged reaction seen and heard after he jokingly urged the Russians to hack then-Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s emails in 2016.

Imagine someone is stupid enough to believe China would have access to our F-22 planes. Now imagine that person being the former President of America and former Commander in Chief 🤦🏽♀️ https://t.co/pUg9WMgjZj

The former President of the United States is an idiot. https://t.co/SL6C7cyr8Q

I cannot believe this is real. Good lord.

This dude ascended to the Presidency. Idiocracy is real.

Does his ‘base’ not see the idiocy here? Why Tillerson said he is “a fucking idiot?” They (tautologically) are fucking idiots too. Membership to base requires lack of is of vaccination proof.

It’s not clear why they’re so unable to just get the joke.
No, his base sees the joke here. Why don’t you?

The same thing happened repeatedly before and during Trump’s presidency, and the fact that he kept tossing out jokes despite knowing the left couldn’t handle them eventually earned him the nickname of “troll master.”
In 2019, House Judiciary Committee chair Jerry Nadler subpoenaed the Department of Homeland Security for documents related to an alleged joke the then-president had said at a closed-door meeting months earlier.
That same year, the then-president posted a video meme depicting him as president “4EVA.” That triggered outrage. While speaking about COVID models the following year, he made a joke about female models. That triggered outrage.
The cycle has repeated itself ad nauseam over the years and apparently continues to this day, with the left reflexively bursting into rage any time he tells a joke.
Back in 2019, Politico contributor Joanna Weiss tried to slap some sense into the left.
“[I]f you’re paying as much attention to all of his tweets … you’ll find some striking moments when Trump isn’t just raging outward, but making fun of himself — even showing a wry acceptance of the caricatures favored by the left,” she wrote.
She then proceeded to provide numerous examples.
“He has challenged his followers to find the secret meaning behind his famed ‘covfefe’ accidental tweet. He’s made light of the notion that he would seek a third term, joking about leaving office ‘in six years, or maybe 10 or 14 (just kidding),'” according to Weiss.
“In August, as he was floating the purchase of a certain Danish territory, he tweeted a picture of a gold-plated Trump hotel photoshopped onto a craggy shore, along with the words, ‘I promise not to do this to Greenland!’ He makes cracks about himself in person, too; at a rally in Louisiana this week, he poked fun at the rambling rhetoric that sometimes gets him into trouble: ‘I do my best work off script … I also do my worst work off script.'”
Her point was that “these were genuine, self-aware, sometimes even self-deprecating jokes,” but only “if you were in the mindset to receive them.”
“Of course,” she added, “many Trump opponents aren’t,” and that, she warned, was a big mistake. Indeed, because nobody likes someone who can’t take a joke.
Trump pokes fun at himself. Why do only some people see it?: His self-aware sense of humor is a powerful weapon. If you can spot the joke. https://t.co/Hk2hdUTbJS #25thAmendmentNow #ImpeachTrump #TheResistance pic.twitter.com/NssKG8nbUl

Dovetailing back to the former president’s latest joke, it was reportedly made during a Republican National Committee retreat this weekend in New Orleans. The same retreat, in fact, where former Vice President Mike Pence spoke on Friday.
Moreover, according to anonymous sources, the folks who were with Trump when he made the Russia/China joke all burst into laughter at his remark.
And yet, despite the laughter, and despite the former president’s rich history of joke-making, many in the establishment left continue to take him literally.
Why? Some suspect it’s because of Trump Derangement Syndrome …
No matter how deranged you think a TDS sufferer is he always shows that he’s even more deranged than you thought.
