Condoleezza Rice is suggesting that the Russian Federation president’s behavior is in an uncharacteristic, unrealistic downward spiral in the context of the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Vladimir Putin “expected an easy win,” but “the Russians may have bit off more than they can chew,” she also said.
In an in-studio appearance on Fox News Sunday, Rice, the former U.S. secretary of state under President George W. Bush, reacted to a tweet from U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio who said that something is “off” with Putin as opposed to the way he would have conducted himself five years ago. “He’s always been a killer, but his problem now is different and significant,” the senator claimed.
Rice, who in her career as a top federal government official, had numerous sit-downs with Putin, seemed to agree with the Florida GOP lawmaker.
She told Harris Faulkner, one of the program’s rotating hosts after the departure of Chris Wallace, that “this is a different Putin,” while making reference to his background as an officer in the former Soviet Union’s dreaded secret police agency.
“He always, as Sen. Rubio said, this was an ex-KGB man. He once said ‘you’re always essentially a KGB man’ if you are. [Putin] had that tough veneer. He was always calculating and cold. But this is different. He seems erratic. There is an ever-deepening, delusional rendering of history; it was always a kind of victimology about what had happened to them, but now it goes back to blaming Lenin for the foundation of Kyiv…of Ukraine. So he’s descending into something that I personally haven’t seen before.”
I wish I could share more, but for now I can say it’s pretty obvious to many that something is off with #Putin
He has always been a killer, but his problem now is different & significant
It would be a mistake to assume this Putin would react the same way he would have 5 years ago

Let me stress again that we are NOT dealing with 2008 #Putin
It is a grave error to assume he will make the same calculations & decisions today that he would have made in the past
The old Putin was a cold blooded but calculating killer
This new Putin is even more dangerous

There are reports that Putin, 69, is furious about the fierce resistance he’s encountered in Ukraine from Ukrainian soldiers for the past four days as he has tried to topple that country’s government. The ongoing war is supposedly costing Putin $20 billion per day, and that the Russian military is allegedly running out of supplies.
Putin has also reportedly ordered his nuclear forces put on high alert known as “special regime of combat duty.”
Retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Joseph Keith Kellogg, a former Trump administration official, has predicted that Putin is headed toward defeat.
Vladimir Putin has ruled Russia with an iron hand since 1999, including a time as prime minister.
During the Fox interview, Rice also expressed cautious optimism about the news of peace talks today between the two countries.
“While I’m certain that [President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government will use the words of Ronald Reagan, ‘trust, but verify,’ here. And so, it’s always a good thing if in the middle of something like this, there is chance for a peaceful resolution, because we can see the suffering in Ukraine. These incredibly brave people and what they’re going through.
“But we’ll see what terms the Russians offer, and I’m sure that it’s a good thing that they’re gonna talk. But if anything, what this may show is that Vladimir Putin expected an easy win here. He thought he would waltz into the capital, into Kyiv. In his own delusional rendering of history, Ukrainians and Russians are the same, and he would overthrow this government and might even be welcomed as a liberator. And of course, the reality has been something quite different. So perhaps this is a little bit of a signal that the Russians bit off more than they can chew… let’s wait and see if anything really materializes here,” Rice asserted.
An interesting footnote to history is that President Zelenskyy, who is receiving widespread international praise for his leadership in the crisis, was a former comedian who played the role of Ukraine’s president on a popular TV show for four years.
