The Florida man who “broke the internet” after he grabbed Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s podium during the chaos at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, has been sentenced to more than two months in prison for his role in the so-called “insurrection,” a stunt that he admits he now regrets.
On Friday, Adam Johnson received a punishment of 75 days behind bars along with one year of supervised release from U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton who also ordered him to pay a $5,000 fine along with 200 hours of community service, a steep price for his fleeting moment of fame.
When it comes to the day’s most memorable scenes, the image of the smiling Johnson waving at the camera while posing with Pelosi’s purloined lectern was among the most recognizable, right up there with that of “QAnon shaman” Jake Angeli.

When the protests on that infamous day spiraled out of control, Johnson was among those who “breached” the Capitol where he “temporarily stole and carried the Speaker’s podium to the Rotunda” to stage a “photo op” among other charges made by prosecutors in a court filing.
Johnson was so impressed with his feat that he bragged that he “broke the internet” and was “finally famous,” after driving home, according to the Associated Press which quoted prosecutors who argued that his behavior at the Capitol “illustrate his sense of entitlement and privilege.”
“The defense lawyers said Johnson didn’t know that the podium belonged to Pelosi when he moved it from a cloak room,'” AP reported. “Arguably, if he latched onto some other piece of government furniture for his photo opportunity jail time would not even be a consideration,” they wrote in a court filing.”
Johnson, who was arrested two days after the Capitol riot, pleaded guilty in November, and acknowledged to Judge Walton that posing with the lectern was a “very stupid idea.”
“I bear no ill will toward her or her office at all,” he also said of Madame Speaker, “If I did find her, I would ask for a selfie with her, if anything,”
Along with the sentence, the father of five received a stern lecture from the D.C. judge who lamented the direction of the country if citizens believe that they “have a right to do whatever in order to have the person who they want in power sitting in the White House.”
“That’s what we see in banana republics,” he said according to AP. “That’s what we see in countries like we’re experiencing now over in Ukraine. That’s where we’re headed if we don’t do something to stop it. And I don’t know what we do to stop it.”
Leftists took to Twitter to whine about the lack of a more severe sentence although it is probably not much of a reach to suggest that some wouldn’t be satisfied with anything short of being locked in a dungeon for life.
Remember the Jan 6 criminal who carried around Nancy Pelosi's podium? Sentenced to 75 days in prison. That's ridiculous. That's the kind of sentence you give to a kid who pulls a prank, not someone who storms our Capitol as part of an insurrection, an attempted coup.#RickShow

"MORE THAN 2 MONTHS!" Yeah, why not encourage terrorism, right @TheJusticeDept? What a disappointment! Shame on you for awarding these mild sentences to these domestic terrorists.https://t.co/S6LOnM1tNM

Meanwhile in democracy, this clown (stay-at-home dad of 5 married to a medical doctor) who suggested using Washington's bust as a "battering ram" gets 75 DAYS in prison. Toxic masculinity rarely gets the punishment it deserves. #FloridaMan #January6th https://t.co/IhETxHMQsp

“More than 750 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the riot. More than 200 of them have pleaded guilty, mostly to misdemeanors. At least 100 riot defendants have been sentenced, and more than 80 others have trial dates this year,” according to AP.
