The Ottawa Police Service has threatened to track down and charge anyone who calls either 911 or their “non-emergency number” to complain about their alleged abuse of protesters.

The Ottawa Police made the threat Saturday afternoon amid the uproar over video footage showing their officers “trampling” a woman with their horses and beating protesters.

“We know the events in #Ottawa are upsetting. Still, we’re asking people to stop calling critical emergency and operational phone lines to express displeasure about the police action to remove an unlawful assembly downtown,” they wrote.

“Lives can depend on 911 calls getting through. It is a crime to unnecessarily call 911 or our non-emergency number (613-236-1222). We track calls and will charge anyone deliberately interfering with the phone lines.”

Look:

If they’d just referenced the 911 number, then perhaps the public would have understood. But because they also demanded that the public not bother them on their “non-emergency” line, they wound up stirring a hornet’s nest.

In fairness to the Ottawa Police, they did post the link to the Office of the Independent Police Review Director so that members of the public may file a formal complaint.

But on the other hand, some argued that the police were in no position to be making any demands whatsoever given their alleged “#CrimesAgainstHumanity” and vowed that they’d continue calling the non-emergency line.

Look (*Language warning):

As previously reported, during a protest Friday, a contingent of Ottawa officers on horses charged through a crowd and reportedly “trampled” an elderly woman.

At least two other troubling incidents occurred during the protest. Protest organizer Benjamin Dichter told the Toronto Sun that “one of [the] drivers had his truck windows smashed by Ottawa Police [with] guns drawn and [he was] dragged out of his vehicle by force.” Meanwhile, a protester was seen seemingly getting smashed either in the head or elsewhere on the body by the barrel end of an officer’s rifle.

Early Saturday morning, the police posted a tweet justifying their actions:

However, their actions grew even more excessive Saturday.

“Canada police use pepper spray, stun grenades to clear protesters,” a blunt headline from Al Jazeera reads.

“Canadian police on Saturday used pepper spray and stun grenades in a final push to clear the capital of trucks and demonstrators who occupied downtown Ottawa for more than three weeks to protest against pandemic restrictions,” according to the actual story.

You won’t find many similar headlines from the Western media, which, it would appears, has chosen to frame the past few day’s events in a way designed to make the police look good:

  • The Hill: “Ottawa police don protective gear, firearms arresting protesters”
  • The New York Times: “Police in Ottawa Rout Truckers With a Show of Force”
  • The Washington Post: “Canadian police appear to end protesters’ siege of Ottawa”

This, incidentally, is the exact of how they’d framed the deadly, violent Black Lives Matter riots of 2020 …
