Romney: Biden was elected ‘to stop the crazy,’ voters weren’t asking him ‘to transform America’

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) sat down with host Chuck Todd on “Meet the Press” Sunday to discuss Biden’s first year at the helm, referencing his “52 weeks of bad weeks” and a severely divided nation while insisting the president was elected “to stop the crazy” and not to “transform America.”

Romney contended that Biden was elected to office to restore a sense of normalcy to the presidency rather than provide radical progressive change. His words were prompted by Biden’s radical voting rights rant in Atlanta last week.

“President Biden said he was going to try to unite the country,” Romney remarked. “His comments in Georgia did not suggest he’s trying to pull us back together again.”

“He’s got to recognize that when he was elected, people were not looking for him to transform America. They were looking to get back to normal. To stop the crazy. And it seems like we’re continuing to see the kinds of policy and promotions that are not accepted by the American people,” he noted, chiding Biden while taking a gratuitous poke at former President Trump.

Biden has pivoted from pushing COVID as his latest emergency to demanding that voting rights legislation be passed in an attempt to federalize elections and keep Democrats in power indefinitely. He’s even backtracking on his unwillingness to nix the filibuster and is willing, in this instance, to do a carveout to force the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act through.

The president asserted on Tuesday that there was “no option” but to abolish the filibuster in order for Democrats to pass the reforms with a simple Senate majority. He then compared opponents of his voting rights legislation to “racist” historical figures such as George Wallace, Bull Conner, and Jefferson Davis, who were all Democrats.

Romney helped Biden pass his $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill that was signed into law in November. He’s now telling the president he needs a “reset” for his presidency after a horrid first year as commander-in-chief.

The Utah senator had lots of Biden’s failures to choose from including Russia getting ready to invade Ukraine, inflation, illegal immigration, the Afghanistan debacle that resulted in U.S. troops being killed, supply chain failures, and the COVID mess.

“Things are not going well,” Romney said, stating the obvious. “And the president needs to stop and reset and say what it is he’s trying to accomplish.”

“And if it’s to try and transform America, he is not going to unite us. Bringing us together means finding a way to work on a bipartisan basis. He had one success, the infrastructure bill, and that was done by Republicans and Democrats in the Senate working together. Build on that kind of success,” he advised.

“Sadly, this election reform bill that the president has been pushing, I never got a call on that from the White House,” Romney whined. “There was no negotiation bringing Republicans and Democrats together to try and come up with something that would meet bipartisan interest.”

“Recognize the Founders didn’t have that vision in mind,” he declared. “They didn’t want an autocrat to be able to pull a lever in one place and change all the election laws. Instead, they spread that out over 50 states. I think in part to keep autocracy from finding its root here in this country. We can work together.”

GOP Senator Marsha Blackburn also addressed Biden’s push on voting rights Sunday, stating that Democrats are employing “radical policies” in a desperate bid to hold onto the majority in Congress after the 2022 midterms.

“Bear in mind, they’re trying to eliminate the filibuster to push forward their radical agenda, the socialist takeover. But they used the filibuster this week to block a vote on Ted Cruz’s Nord Stream 2 sanction bill. So very hypocritical,” Blackburn told Fox News.

“But once again, they are going to try to do away with the filibuster to blow up the Senate, so they can blow up the courts, so they can blow up our form of government,” she continued.

“They’ll try to use some legislative trickery to move forward their election takeover bill, which would institutionalize ballot harvesting, mail-in ballots,” Blackburn added.

“They know that these radical policies are the only way that they can win, so they’re willing to strip people of some of their rights, strip our states of their constitutional authority in order to get the power they want,” she charged.

“Democrats want to blow up Senate rules and strip the American people of their voice in order to pass a socialist agenda,” she tweeted.

Romney is despised on both sides of the political aisle even when he’s partially right. People also noticed the “reset” reference which is now a talking point on the left:
