Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) commented to CNN host Jake Tapper on Wednesday that President Biden may have gone a bit “too far” in his Georgia speech comparing anyone who opposes the left’s voting rights attempt at federalizing elections to infamous segregationists such as Bull Connor and George Wallace.

“It is stark, and I will concede that point,” he told Tapper grudgingly admitting that Biden’s remarks were beyond the pale even for leftists.

The Senate majority whip argued that “there are parallels there” in what Biden said, arguing Republicans have tried to make it harder for Americans to vote and then disingenuously comparing it to attempts to keep black Americans from voting.

“Perhaps the President went a little too far in his rhetoric,” the No. 2 Senate Democrat charged. “Some of us do, but the fundamental principles and values at stake are very similar,” Durbin said, justifying Biden’s intent.

Tapper seized on Biden’s racially charged speech given in Atlanta, Georgia. The President attacked Republicans accusing them of being cut from the same cloth as Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Alabama politician Bull Connor, and Alabama Governor George Wallace. Ironically, all of those just mentioned were Democrats.

“So I ask every elected official in America, how do you want to be remembered?” Biden asked. “Do you want to be on the side of Dr. King or George Wallace? Do you want to be on the side of John Lewis or Bull Connor? Do you want to be on the side of Abraham Lincoln or Jefferson Davis?”

Biden has previously praised George Wallace and crowed about receiving his support.

“How profoundly, profoundly unpresidential,” Republican Senate Minority Leader McConnell proclaimed following the speech. “Look, I’ve known, liked, and personally respected Joe Biden for many years. I did not recognize the man at the podium yesterday.”

McConnell was incensed that Biden invoked the Civil War “to demonize Americans who disagree with him” and proceeded to assert that the president compared “a bipartisan majority of senators to literal traitors.”

Even MSNBC commenter and liberal activist Al Sharpton thought it was a bridge too far for Biden. He slammed the speech, calling it a “you’re going to hell” speech rather than one meant to get votes or support.

“I thought it was a good speech,” Sharpton remarked. “Now, in this particular case, dealing with my friend and brother Joe, if he was trying to get votes, it was not the vote-getting speech … I’m a minister. Either you get up, and you try to persuade people of their sins and appeal to their better angels. But when they come to church, and they still have the jug of whiskey up under the pew, you say, you’re going to hell. I think he gave a ‘you’re going to hell’ speech.”

Tapper also pointed to the fact on his show Tuesday that Democrats were only complaining about voting restrictions in red states, not blue ones such as New Jersey and Delaware that don’t allow ballot harvesting.

“Look, I genuinely as an American feel that in addition to guarding against fraud, which is very little of in the United States, it should be as easy as possible for Americans to vote,” he contended.

“We are the best democratic republic when as many people as possible are represented, no matter who wins, Democrats or Republicans. But going over a lot of these election laws, I went in, preparing for today, and I saw, you know what? New Jersey doesn’t allow ballot harvesting. And that’s a Democratic state. Delaware doesn’t allow the kind of early voting that a lot of other states do. How come — but then the journalist in me, as well as the cynic, says, ‘Well, how come Democrats only complain about the voting — strict voting regulations in red states, in Texas and Georgia and not in Democratic states like New York?’” Tapper asked.
