CDC’s Walensky confirms how dramatically wrong Sotomayor was in stunning Biden-like interview

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky was grilled on “Fox News Sunday” by host Bret Baier concerning Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor falsely claiming more than 100,000 children have been hospitalized due to COVID and over how many deaths there have been that are attributable solely to the virus.

Many felt Walensky’s responses were wholly lacking in substance as usual. She kept proclaiming that children who are hospitalized due to COVID are unvaccinated and only answered Baier specifically when pinned over it. She grudgingly acknowledged that Baier was correct in stating that there are fewer than 3,500 children in hospitals with COVID.

“Yeah, but, you know, here’s what I can tell you about our pediatric hospitalizations now,” Walensky said. “First of all, the vast majority of children who are in the hospital are unvaccinated, and for those children who are not eligible for vaccination we do know they are most likely to get sick with COVID if their family members aren’t vaccinated.”

During this same interview, Walensky ducked a question over the public losing confidence in the CDC, complaining “this is hard.”

“Before you took this job officially, you emphasized that one of your primary goals was to restore public trust,” Baier stated, adding, “but in this time, do you think that it’s fair to say that the trust and confidence the public has gone down, with the CDC?”

Walensky replied, “You know, this is hard, we have ever-evolving science with an ever-evolving variant, and my job is to provide updated guidance in the context of rapidly rising cases and that is what we’ve done, and I am here to explain it to the American people and I’m committed to continuing to do so and to continuing to improve.”

Sotomayor made her egregiously false claim during oral arguments concerning President Biden’s vaccine mandate imposed on businesses with at least 100 employees that would force them to get their workers vaccinated or undergo weekly tests. Failure to do so would result in massive, business-busting fines.

Sotomayor’s fib earned her four “Pinocchios” from the Washington Post’s fact-checker.

“We have over 100,000 children, which we’ve never had before, in serious condition and many on ventilators,” Sotomayor proclaimed grossly overstating the actual statistic.

Walensky was also put on the spot over how many people enter the hospital with COVID versus those who go there and are subsequently diagnosed with the virus.

“Do you know how many of the 836,000 deaths in the U.S. linked to COVID are from COVID or how many are with COVID, but they had other comorbidities? Do you have that breakdown?” Baier asked.

“Yes of course with omicron we’re following that very carefully,” she responded. “Our death registry, of course, takes a few weeks…to collect. And of course, omicron has just been with us for a few weeks. But those data will be forthcoming.”

“In some hospitals that we’ve talked to, up to 40% of the patients who are coming in with COVID are coming in not because they’re sick with COVID but because they’re coming in with something else and have had COVID or the Omicron variant detected,” she reluctantly admitted.

Walensky claimed to not know how many children are on ventilators due to the virus. She did state that she believes many hospitals don’t have any vaccinated children on ventilators.

“While pediatric hospitalizations are rising, they are still about 15-fold less than hospitalizations of our older demographics,” she noted, but only after Baier kept pinning her on the subject.

“Comparatively, the risk of death is small, but of course, children aren’t supposed to die,” she dramatically posited. “So if we have a child who is sick with COVID-19 … we want to protect them, of course.”

“I want to remind people that in the fall of this year we had a Delta surge, and we were able to safely keep our children in school before pediatric vaccination,” she said continuing her heavy push for vaccinations.

Sotomayor had also mentioned the Delta variant during her oral arguments on Friday. She falsely contended that the much milder Omicron variant is just as deadly as Delta. But Omicron replicates in the throat, not the lungs, and is seen by many experts as far less of a threat than Delta.

The CDC director seemed to brush off her assertion on the lethality of Omicron, stating that “on a person-by-person basis, it may not be,” but then covered her bases by saying the death rate “may rise dramatically.” That is a specious claim and has not been the case so far.
