Medical analyst Dr. Leana Wen went on CNN Monday to blast outgoing NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, saying he shouldn’t cancel the city’s famous New Year’s Eve celebration and that cloth masks are “little more than facial decoration” when it comes to mitigating viral spread.
That the celebration itself is outdoors which allows for unlimited ventilation, as well as the requirements for full vaccination status of all attendants, it doesn’t make sense to stop the party from happening. Even with the Omicron variant becoming more common, Dr. Wen advised against eliminating events that don’t pose any real danger. Then she dropped the bomb: Those quaint cloth masks that Americans have been forced to wear for the last two years are pretty much useless.
I do not think that Mayor De Blasio should cancel NYC’s New Year celebration. This is outdoors & requires vaccination. Yes, omicron is surging, but we need to continue activities that are of high-value while adding precautions that reduce risk. @BilldeBlasio @VictorBlackwell pic.twitter.com/tyOfQ5fT7g

“Well I do not think Mayor de Blasio should be canceling the New York City event because it requires proof of vaccination and it’s outdoors,” the doctor explained. “We should be keeping the events that are safe and also the events that have fun for people, too. We can’t be canceling everything especially if we’re going to be living with COVID for the foreseeable future.”
“I would say that if you choose to go, that you’re vaccinated and boosted make sure that you’re wearing a mask even though it’s outdoors there are lots of people packed around you, wearing a three-ply surgical mask. Don’t wear a cloth mask, cloth masks are little more than facial decorations. There’s no place for them in light of Omicron,” she continued.
Considering Americans were hounded to wear masks, and were told that cloth masks were acceptable for the majority of the pandemic, it’s unclear why Dr. Wen gave the advice that she did. Either cloth masks have always been useless, or they’re just fine now.
The admission didn’t slip by Twitter sleuths, some of whom had a lot of really good questions. Others raged at the doctor for lending credence to the idea that people should be allowed to live their lives when others are too scared. Many even called for her license to be revoked, likely because she said something they didn’t want to hear: (** Language warning)
Why are cloth masks worthless now with omicron but were fine for the rest of the pandemic?

So this hack- @DrLeanaWen says “no place for a cloth mask in light of omicron” but gladly pushed it when #Delta was/is surging. #UNMASKOURCHILDREN https://t.co/utJMolOUIj

If vaccines worked you wouldn’t need restrictions.

NYE in Times Square is the very definition of high risk for zero value. Doctors lending some level of credibility to this shit should have their licenses revoked. Irresponsible, immoral, unethical, borderline evil. https://t.co/CuVMvOvvjP

“Cloth masks are little more than facial decorations.” This is either in need of flagging as misinformation or the toddlers can unmask now bc Dr. Wen said so. https://t.co/PjYNqdnCkn

CNN’s says that cloth masks are face decorations. If a Fox’er said it, Twitter would flag it. https://t.co/rGPqEpJcW8
