Amid the devastating rash of tornadoes that decimated dozens of communities in America’s Heartland this weekend, leftists, including at least one congressional Democrat, have been busy doing what they do best: attacking Republicans.
Namely Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, whose home state was one of those that suffered catastrophic damage because of the tornadoes.
On Saturday, he and several other Kentucky Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, submitted separate letters to President Joe Biden requesting that he approve Gov. Andy Beshear’s request for aid.
“The governor of the Commonwealth has requested federal assistance this morning, and certainly further requests will be coming as the situation is assessed. I fully support those requests and ask that you move expeditiously to approve the appropriate resources for our state,” the senator wrote.
UPDATE: This morning I sent a letter to President Biden requesting expeditious approval of the Governor’s requests for federal assistance following the deadly and devastating storms across Kentucky.
Posted by Senator Rand Paul on Saturday, December 11, 2021
This letter provided leftists with the little bit of impetus they needed to launch another hate campaign against the frequently targeted senator.
It appears the attacks began with Raw News, a leftist propaganda outlet that published a piece outlining three past instances in which the Kentucky senator had voted against providing aid to communities in need.
Here’s one example: “In 2017, Paul was one of just 17 senators to oppose an emergency $15.3 billion federal relief bill for victims of Hurricane Harvey. It had wreaked havoc similar to Friday’s tornado, but not in Kentucky.”
Conveniently not mentioned by the propaganda site is that the Hurricane Harvey relief bill had been combined with unrelated measures, including a raising of the debt ceiling. At the time of the vote, the senator wrote an op-ed for The Hill offering an alternative solution.
“I absolutely want to make sure their needs are met, and that we take care of people. But I also know that we are $20 trillion in debt and climbing, with no sign of letting up,” he wrote in the piece.
“So, I have proposed a simple, ‘America First,’ fiscally responsible solution: we should pay for the emergency funds with cuts from elsewhere, specifically money we send overseas to foreign countries.”
This op-ed was not mentioned by Raw News or any of the other leftist sites and individuals who rushed to attack Paul on Saturday.
Included among them was Chinese-spy lover Rep. Eric Swalwell, though he was by no means alone.
Look:
We should do all we can to help our Kentucky neighbors. God be with them — they are hurting. But do not for one second forget that @RandPaul has voted against helping most Americans most times they’re in need. https://t.co/JkZQOZ4HuG

We know @RandPaul is a heartless hypocrite. The people in Kentucky deserve the relief regardless of their buffoonish leadership, but if the Dems don’t use this against him and his party in the future, it is a missed opportunity. https://t.co/G61GrsNfFq

So after voting his entire career against federal aid for other states that were in trouble, @RandPaul now begs @POTUS for relief for Kentucky. What a loathsome piece of garbage. Not because the people of Kentucky need help, but because Randy is nothing but a grandstanding fop.

You’re a huge fan of Socialism now aren’t you? What a prick! If I were Joe, I would make you go on the @seanhannity show and beg for it in front of all your #Hypocrite Republican followers. I want to hear you beg for the relief, you have denied to Americans.

Socialism for ME, but not for thee! Amirite Rand?

Missing from these criticisms was recognition that it’s possible to hold two positions at once: One, that the national debt is an issue and must be reined in, and two, that devastated communities deserve aid, albeit without unrelated pork add-ons.
Also missing was the empathy to recognize that politicizing a tragedy that’s left God knows how many virtually homeless and at least dozens dead is disgusting.
But as noted by Chad Felix Greene, a prominent former Democrat who #WalkedAway because of the Democrat Party’s descent into “woke” madness, the sad thing is that they, particularly the likes of Swalwell, just can’t help themselves:
They cannot help themselves. https://t.co/dYc3IVcESc

Do you have to sleep with Chinese spies to become this heartless or were you born that way @RepSwalwell?#Loser https://t.co/AgZYwTuCma

Taking cheap political shots in the wake of death and disaster. He’s a shameless opportunist. Just ask Fang Fang.

It’s sad politics have dipped to this level. Genuinely disgusting.

People are dead, missing, lives ruined and the only language you know how to speak is miserable prick

We can always count on you to have the worst “can’t read the room” take of the day.

And indeed, this behavior extends through the whole party. Even the president participated in it Saturday by using the devastation to argue that climate change is to blame, meaning his climate change policies must be passed to stop tornadoes …
