‘Jail is not the answer’: Waukesha suspect’s mom believes lack of mental health services is to blame

The mother of the suspect in the Waukesha, Wisc., Christmas parade massacre suggests that shortcomings in the “broken” mental health delivery system may have led to the devastating incident on November 21 in suburban Milwaukee.

“Instead of offering help and resources to combat the problem, a jail cell was given. Over and over again,” she lamented.

In a lengthy letter released to local media, Dawn Woods insisted, however, that she and her family are not making any excuses for what occurred when Darrell Brooks in his SUV allegedly plowed into the parade participants and bystanders, killing six and injuring more than 60, but implied that the tragedy could have been avoided with proper interventions.

“[W]e believe what has happened is because he was not given the help and resources he needed. Institutions that are equipped and have trained staff is what was needed as well as resources in the communities where people who suffer with mental illness live,” Mrs. Woods wrote, in part, according to CBS Milwaukee affiliate WDJT.

“Jail is not the answer…We as a society must take mental illness seriously by fixing a broken system or suffer the consequences, sad as it is to say what happened in Waukesha will keep happening all over this country, in one form or another with more innocent lives lost and grieving families and communities,” she continued.

“Mental illness is real and the system is broken it can and must be fixed NOW, not next year or with a new legislation NOW. So many like Darrell that have fallen through the cracks because of a broken system that no one cared to address, can get the help they so desperately need.”

In the open letter, Dawn Woods also offered condolences to the victims’ families. She went on to say that Darrell Brooks was dealing with mental health issues since he was a child.

“When he became an adult a decision was made that he no longer suffered from a mental illness. That decision left him with no insurance or financial means to pay for medication and when determined necessary counseling.”

Another disturbing component of this tragic event that the corporate media is trying to downplay or even forget about is that suspect Brooks, 39, probably never should have been out on the street in the first place.

In a Milwaukee County jurisdiction presided over by George Soros-backed, left-wing District Attorney John Chisholm, Brooks, who is reportedly has a long rap sheet, was released on just $1,000 bail after he allegedly ran over his ex-girlfriend with the same SUV on November 2, two weeks before the parade rampage.

Authorities now claim that the record of that bail hearing is nowhere to be found owing to “technical issues.”

Obviously, after the fact, Chisholm has described the bail as “inappropriately low” and launched an internal probe into the matter.

Brooks is now being held on $5 million bail, even though no bail would probably be more appropriate given the magnitude of the homicide charges that he faces.

Many, if not all, of the DA candidates that billionaire Soros has bankrolled support so-called bail reform, which in practice often means a catch-and-release program for repeat violent offenders.

In a New York Post op-ed, Tennessee congressional candidate and conservative influencer Robby Starbuck joined those who have denounced the Soros involvement in local elections, where campaign contributions apparently aren’t effectively capped.

The crime wave sweeping across the country is the direct result of a years-long campaign by George Soros to bankroll the election of far-left district attorneys committed to undermining law and order…

The Soros approach shocked the entire country recently when the soft-on-crime policies of one of his prosecutors led directly to the massacre of innocent parade-goers — including children and elderly grandmothers — in Waukesha, Wis.

The culprit was a career criminal who had just been released from Milwaukee County jail on a mere $1,000 bail despite a history of violent crime and bail-jumping. Although John Chisholm, the DA who set him free, subsequently acknowledged that bail was set “inappropriately low,” he has a long history of fighting to reduce bail with the express intention of minimizing the amount of time that criminals spend in jail…

It’s not just the high-profile tragedies that demonstrate the dangers of the Soros DA network, though. Every single day, Soros-backed prosecutors are cultivating a culture of lawlessness that puts residents at risk…

Separately, according to the Post, Dawn Woods regrets posting the $1,000 bail for her son. “She’s wrecked that people were killed as a result and she’s like, ‘I’m blaming myself, because had I not bailed him out, this wouldn’t have happened,” Darrell Brooks’ ex-girlfriend told the news outlet.
