Ponder Trump proposing this! Crickets from left over report Biden might ship migrants off to Gitmo

The number of Haitian migrants at the border continues to grow with no sign of slowing, and while the Biden administration has remained largely silent on the issue, it’s proposing one new way to deal with migrant overflow that’s received surprisingly little media backlash: Housing Haitian migrants at Guantanamo Bay.

The Biden administration is reportedly looking for a private contractor to hire guards who speak Spanish and Haitian Creole to operate the little-known migrant detention facility on Gitmo that has a capacity of 120.

“The service provider shall be responsible to maintain on site the necessary equipment to erect temporary housing facilities for populations that exceed 120 and up to 400 migrants in a surge event,” the government’s contract notice states.

The media would have had a field day if former President Trump ever even suggested housing migrants at the most notorious maximum-security prison in the nation’s history and that reality was not lost on Twitter users:

Biden’s Department of Homeland Security tried to downplay the contract in a statement to NBC News:

“[The administration]is not [sending] and will not send Haitian nationals being encountered at the southwest border to the Migrant Operations Center (MOC) in Guantanamo Bay. The MOC has been used for decades to process migrants interdicted at sea for third-country resettlement. The request for information (RFI) recently posted is a typical, routine first step in a contract renewal, and unrelated to the Southwest Border.”

DHS reported that the contract was initially awarded in 2002 with an end date of May 31, 2022.

“Migrants awaiting resettlement who are not in ICE custody at the MOC are neither detained nor imprisoned and are free at any time to return to their country of origin,” the agency claimed.

The administration appears to be quietly looking for solutions to address their completely botched immigration policies which have led to about 15,000 mostly Haitian migrants living in a tent city under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas– though the administration unsurprisingly continues to have the media on their side.

In fact, NBC News harkened back to the George H.W. Bush administration when up to 12,000 Haitians were sent to Guantanamo Bay under a policy supervised by then-Attorney General William Barr in the early 1990s.

The new DHS contract listing says that whoever wins the bid for it must supply tents and cots and be ready to assemble them with little notice. It also requires that the contractor maintain a roster of at least 50 individuals who meet the “minimum requirements of  the unarmed custody officer job classification and have a viable contingency plan to deploy these individuals within 24 hours of notification.”

It adds: “At least 10% of the augmented personnel must be fluent in Spanish and Haitian Creole. Air transportation to/from the facility is the sole responsibility of the service provider.”

Miles Taylor, a former political appointee under the Trump administration at DHS, who was happy to collect government paychecks while collecting material for his flop of a “tell-all” book, claimed that Trump considered using Gitmo to house migrants, but that the idea was quashed.

If the media weren’t busy giving Biden a free pass, perhaps it would occur to them to ask about former President Obama’s pledge to close Gitmo, seeing that Biden was his Vice President and all.
