House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appears to be naively optimistic that the Taliban — a violent, misogynistic terrorist group rooted in Islamic fundamentalism — can be persuaded to allow women a place “at the table” once it recaptures all of Afghanistan.
She expressed this naivety in a statement issued late Saturday that also contained praise for President Joe Biden, despite his orchestration of the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan being an abject failure that’s been slammed by all sides.
In fairness to the House speaker, her statement began sensibly enough.
“The Taliban must know that the world is watching its actions. We are deeply concerned about reports regarding the Taliban’s brutal treatment of all Afghans, especially women and girls. The U.S., the international community and the Afghan government must do everything we can to protect women and girls from inhumane treatment by the Taliban,” she said.
However, she then began making impossible demands.
“Any political settlement that the Afghans pursue to avert bloodshed must include having women at the table. The fate of women and girls in Afghanistan is critical to the future of Afghanistan,” she said.
But with the Taliban on the verge of reconquering the entire nation, that’s simply not going to happen, no matter how much either she, the Biden administration or the wider global community beg the terrorist group to act mercifully.

“As we strive to assist women, we must recognize that their voices are important, and all must listen to them for solutions, respectful of their culture. There is bipartisan support to assist the women and girls of Afghanistan,” Pelosi continued.
“One of the successes of U.S.- NATO cooperation in Afghanistan was the progress made by women and girls. We must all continue to work together to ensure that is not eroded.”
According to reports, it’s already too late.
“Afghans pouring into Kabul and those still in Taliban-held areas say … Taliban commanders have demanded that communities turn over unmarried women to become ‘wives’ for their fighters,” The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
This has reportedly been happening for months.
“After the insurgents in late June took the Rustaq district of the northern province of Takhar, a senior local Taliban figure addressed residents in the mosque during Friday prayers. All girls over the age of 15 and widows younger than 40 should be married to the insurgent fighters, he told the congregation, according to a local man who was present,” according to the Journal.
“The man was later summoned and ordered to hand over his 15-year-old daughter. He said in a telephone interview that he fled the area and was trying to make his way to Kabul from the province, whose capital fell to the Taliban on Sunday.”

After issuing her impossible demands, Pelosi then showered Biden with praise, despite critics from both sides of the political aisle blaming him for the ongoing catastrophe.
“Once again, I want to acknowledge the clarity of purpose of President Biden’s statement and the wisdom of his actions,” she said.
Earlier that day, the president had issued his own statement effectively blaming his predecessor, former President Donald Trump, for his own failure in Afghanistan.
“When I came to office, I inherited a deal cut by my predecessor — which he invited the Taliban to discuss at Camp David on the eve of 9/11 of 2019 — that left the Taliban in the strongest position militarily since 2001 and imposed a May 1, 2021 deadline on U.S. Forces,” the president claimed in a transparent attempt to pass the buck.
In other words, he had no option but to withdraw troops and let the Taliban retake the entire country because of the timeline established by Trump and the Taliban.
But he failed to mention that he’d already broken that timeline months ago — and, more importantly, that the Taliban had explicitly warned him beforehand that consequences would be doled out were he to indeed break it.
He also neglected to mention that unlike him, Trump had threatened the Taliban with severe consequences if it misbehaved.
“I personally had discussions with top Taliban leaders whereby they understood what they are doing now would not have been acceptable. It would have been a much different and much more successful withdrawal, and the Taliban understood that much better than anyone,” according to a statement from the former president.

Pelosi’s naivety vis-a-vis the Taliban is eerily similar to the naivety she displayed vis-a-vis the extremely violent criminal gang MS-13 in 2018.
At the time, she claimed in regard to MS-13 members that there’s “a spark of divinity in every person,” even those who rape, torture and kill without remorse.
It’s not clear whether she feels that members of the Taliban also possess “a spark of divinity” …
