Three purported Chicago-area siblings in their 20s face charges that include attempted first-degree murder on a police officer in an incident that started out as a routine traffic stop.
“A minor infraction that likely would have resulted in a citation, at most, turned into an officer fighting for his life,” Aurora, Ill., PD Chief Kristen Ziman said upon the release on Wednesday of dramatic dash-cam footage of the June 21 encounter that led to the lawman allegedly being strangled.
The as-yet-unidentified officer pulled over the vehicle in question for allegedly running a stop sign and approached the vehicle to politely ask the driver for his license and insurance. The situation unfortunately and quickly escalated from there, although much of it is off-camera.
“I’m gonna knock you out, bro,” the driver allegedly said during the contentious dialogue before which he denied doing anything wrong.
The driver and a female passenger allegedly refused the officer’s direction to stay in the vehicle, at which point he told both of them they are going to placed under arrest for obstruction.
Evidently, a foot chase occurred as the cop pursued the driver. From the sounds of it, he also tried to detain the female, and a struggle with her ensued.
“The two female passengers run after the officer and allegedly begin striking the officer with their fists and kicking him. Aurora police say the officer was struck repeatedly in the head and body and was then strangled by a female passenger to the point where the officer lost consciousness,” Fox 32 Chicago reported.

In what must have seemed like an eternity for the officer under siege, backup cops shortly thereafter arrived on the scene and subdued the assailants.
According to the captioning on the video, “as backup arrives, the two females are on top of the officer, pinning him to the ground. One of the females is sitting on the officer’s head. The other female was applying significant force to the officer’s windpipe, causing him to lose the ability to [breathe.]”
“Because of the strangulation and because of the research that we know about how quickly it is for somebody to lose their life as a result of somebody preventing them from being able to breathe, we believe that the proper charge was attempted first-degree murder,” prosecutor Jamie Mosser noted.
Authorities also released what purports to be an emotional 911 call from the driver, during which he says his family is being terrorized by the officer, and he allegedly threatened to kill the officer, although the audio isn’t entirely clear.
Authorities also charge the suspects were also charged with aggravated battery and aggravated assault, and bonded out of jail. They are due back in court on September 14.
The officer was treated at a local hospital and released the same night which suggests he is apparently okay after the ordeal, fortunately.
